There is not much new, if anything at all, about this, it is also not only a Christian thing to do, accordingly. Many cultures, especially of tribal mentality, do similar things, even in some cases to a further extreme, sometimes it is for show, however it is more common to help them attain greater altered states.... depths within their spirituality.

It may certainly be a "strange" and bazaar thing, however, in our American culture, the black mirror magic* we commonly obsess over numbs our brain and seems to dumb things down a great deal for us, which would likely be seen profoundly different by such backward understanding tribal members/communities.
