When you let labor and not the market dictate the cost of labor, especially government services, you get into trouble. The economic realities can't support the obligation. It's really the same mess we are in. Too many people riding in the wagon and not enough people pulling it.

Second, Greece's GDP is only about 300 billion, compared to the combined 15 trillion for the entire European Union. So essentially, they are all of 2% of the entire EU GDP. And yet their threatened default is going to drag the whole of Europe into a recession, destroy the Euro as a currency.

I think our government did wrong in sending our jobs overseas, and not protecting our workers in our own country, allowing companies to bring in "guest workers" and illegals to keep our wages artificially low.

When my job went to India, I tried to go with it. After all, I can live better on $4.00 an hour in India than I can on less than $9.00 an hour here. Couldn't do it. The Indian government says those jobs are for it's own citizens. Ours is the only country in the world that doesn't protect it's own citizens jobs. We take in more legal immigrants than all other countries combined and we still allow illegals to take our wages even lower.

Our government has done "wrong" by us. If you don't believe that, you're either in the top 10% or you aren't paying attention.

Greece lied to get into the euro. They entered into a debt swap brokered by Goldman Sachs to make it appear they had less debt so they could meet the formal Maastricht requirements.

It wasn't obvious because it wasn't reported.

and now that euro has become a double-edged sword.....some say that this save will pretty much keep them stuck in economic doldrums for the next ten years or more.....

...that if they just defaulted and began over their exports would then become price competitve and recovery would then be much faster....

Greece won't bring down the Euro or the EU, it's too small.
But the way it's treated may set an example that raises the expectations of of other countries.

I'm no economist but the lack of foresight in setting up the Euro is astounding.
Not only is the performance of the Euro dependent on the individual economic policies of the component countries with no effective central control, but, conversely, it means that the component countries don't have all of the mechanisms available to protect themselves such as devaluing their currency.
