Simplisitically lumping muslims together into an evil cabal of "Islamo-facism" probably does wonders for the ratings of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. As do xenophobic statements about invasions from Mexico. The us against the evil doers narrative is a great marketing tool. But, it probably won't pay off at the ballot box.

Democrats Benefit From Shift in Muslim Voters’ Allegiance

By Charles Hoskinson, CQ Staff

Muslim Americans, many of whom gave President Bush enthusiastic support in his first election campaign in 2000, have largely fled the Republican Party and could help Democrats win key states this November.

In surveys over the past six years, Muslims have cited administration policies in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq as reasons why GOP candidates no longer appeal to them.

The surveys by the polling firm Zogby International and the Pew Research Center show how dramatic the shift has been: In the 2000 election, 42 percent of Muslim-American voters surveyed said they had voted for Bush, 31 percent for former Vice President Al Gore and 12 percent for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader. In 2004, just 14 percent voted for Bush, while 71 percent chose Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

“We can intuit that the Republican Party has lost a lot of goodwill among Muslims,” said pollster John Zogby.

Muslims comprise less than 1 percent of the U.S. population, or about 3 million people, according to the most reliable estimates. But most Muslim registered voters are concentrated in key states that both parties need for electoral success in 2008: New York, New Jersey, Texas, California, Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania.

“For the Muslim community, the choice of voting Republican is becoming narrower by the minute,” Hossain said.

The shift in voting patterns concerns Norquist, who sees the problem with Muslims as mirroring the party’s loss of support among Hispanics over the contentious issue of illegal immigration.

He said Republicans have not adequately policed their ranks to discourage bigots and cool the heated rhetoric Muslims take as a lack of respect. Party leaders need to make sure policy proposals focus on real terrorism threats and do not smear an entire community, he said.

“You don’t do guilt by association,” he said. “There needs to be more discipline. The saving grace for Republicans is that Democrats pull that crap, too.”

I'm scratching my head on the huge Muslim concentration in Texas. Lol.

Wonder where it is we keep 'em?

I also wonder how come the left never has to pay the price for treating minorities like children, offering them "candy" in the form of handouts for votes thus perpetuating their dependence on Big Brother.

Some people just refuse to see the writing on the wall.

You all probably need to take a remedial american politics class. The total number of muslims don't matter as much as their electoral distribution.

500,000 Cuban americans in florida commonly dictate who's going to be president.

And the Senate today is in Democratic hands because of 60,000 muslim american votes in virginia.

But, by all means: I have no problem if your party becomes the party of angry white men. Keep smearing hispanics and muslim americans. Cheers.

You need to take a remedial class in reality. You and it don't appear to have much in common.

Anonymous message board poster, who likes to post threads about lapel pins, Gunny, ways there's no significance to alienating muslims and hispanics.

Respected pollster John Zoby, and respected Capitol Hill Journal CQ says there is.

Tough choice. I wonder who I should believe? :eusa_whistle:

The anti-immigration stance taken by the conservatives will cost the GOP big time in the coming years amongst Hispanics.

Sure thing, lets just abolish immigration laws all together. Hell lets dismantle border patrol and eliminate guards and inspections at our borders.

Moron.

This thread is not about immigration levels. This is about how immigration effects the Republican Party.

The simple fact is that the Hispanic population is growing faster than native-born even if all immigration were to be banned today. Do you really think the near-xenophobic hysteria amongst many hard-core conservatives helps the GOP? Have you guys not learned the lesson of Pete Wilson and the Republican Party in California?

The societal impact is different from the political impact, which is what this thread is about. From a political standpoint, do you believe alienating the fastest growing demographic in the country is good politics?

Karl Rove and George W Bush sure did not.

You can get mad and stamp your feet and call people names, but it does not change the political fact that the Republican Party is digging itself into a hole by being seen as so overtly hostile to an increasingly-influential demographic.

The GOP needs to wake the hell up and realize that what's going on is a war against whites. If it won't fight that war, it will disappear.
