Gingrich Maintains 6 Point Lead in S.C.

Romney is leading with non-evangelicals (39-30), independents (30-26), moderates (44-23), and women (32-31). The problem for him is that all of those groups are a minority within the South Carolina Republican electorate.

Unfortunately the problem for Newt is you can't win the election and lose those groups. There simply aren't enough male conservatives to win an election, and his negatives are off the charts.

Oh, look, we're back to the "electability" argument. The last defense of a Romney suppoter. You don't like him, but someone might.

You argue the last defense of anti-Romney candidate. White males make up about 33% of the electorate. Yes, he needs lots of non-whites and non-males, and he polls incredibly negative in those groups.

Newt can't get 44% of the national vote if he becomes the candidate.

So You are really claiming a guy who belongs to a cult that says that dark skin is a curse from God and didn't let black folks become members until 1978 is going to win over all those non-white folk? One who demogouged the immigration issue while hiring them to do his yardwork?

And for the ladies, well, you have Mittens whose whacky cult thinks that women only get into Heaven if bonded to a man... Yup, that'll go over in Stepford, Conneticutt, where I think the Romneys were assembled.

Newt has this in the bag. The sex scandal should hurt him, but "family values" voters don't care where Republican politicians stick their dongs, as long as it's in a woman.

Of the three remaining GOP candidates.........none are at all likeable. McCain wasn't likeable either. You nutters need to find another "W"......he was likea..............oops.

Again, it will largely depend on what the state of the economy is in November.

Nixon wasn't likable. But he looked like he had a pair of balls when Humphry and McGovern had none between them.

Now, I think for the reasons stated that Obama has a strong position, being an incumbant and all.

But impossible? Not likely.

Consult the polls, not me. The numbers are against your man. The Republicans in Stepford will vote for Romney before Newt, and the dems hate Gingrich far more than Romney.

The numbers are solidly against you.

You keep saying Romney can't win. But when someone says the same thing about Gingrich - and Gingrich has far higher negatives than Romney, true story - then you get all bent out of shape.

Hatred is imperceptible to logic.

JoeB proves that with almost every post.

I don't think Newt is going to do nearly as well as the polls project in SC. Obviously, I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time SC supported a Progressive Republican. But I just don't see it happening despite what any polls may be saying.

South Carolina politics are an incredibly sweaty, dirty affair. And they like sweaty, dirty politicians like Newt. This is a place were a state senator can say in public, "we already have one raghead in the White House, we don’t need a raghead in the governor’s mansion" when talking about Nikki Haley.

I can't disagree. Though I am concluding that SC is not nearly as conservative as they have a reputation to be.

South Carolinians generally vote for what they're comfortable with rather then for any of their numerous convictions and even though they lash out at the evil liberal media, 9 times out of 10 they vote the way the evil liberal media tells them to vote.

This is how we got Bush, McCain, and Obama from them.

This year the media's pet candidates are Mittens and the Grinch.

South Carolina actually has a choice of pet candidates this time around, which I believe has actually confused them. So there's actually no telling what may or may not happen.

I'm under the impression that these polls are completely fudged and I think the Grinch has actually been doing much better then Mittens for the past couple of weeks.

My prediction the Grinch will steal South Carolina and will them make himself the "inevitable" nominee, to his own destruction. Unfortunately Santorum will drop out and give in to this idea that the Grinch is the only "not-romney" that has a chance of winning (even though if it's Romney or the Grinch it'll be Romney for sure). Thus Ron Paul will be the only conservative in the race, and YES I will even admit, it's a long shot...
BUSINESS AS USUAL FOLKS... South Carolina screws us over again.

My next prediction: South Carolina's days of "picking presidents" is over.

Last prediction: the Grinch will go back to making commercials about Al Gore's inconvenient truth (or very convenient lie) with the wicked witch of the west.

As of this morning, RCP has RealClearPolitics - Opinion, News, Analysis, Videos and Polls

Latest SC Primary Polls

RasRpts: Gingrich 33, Romney 31
Augusta Chronicle: Gingrich Takes the Lead in South Carolina, 32-29
PPP: Gingrich Now Up Six Points
NBC News: Romney Leads Gingrich By Ten; 5 Points Post-Debate
Politico: Romney Leads 37 - 30
RCP Average: Romney +1.2%

Gingrich may well win this state. Political history in the making makes for amazing tales.

So, about 65 percent accounted for. That's quite a bit unaccounted for. Don't count your newts before they're hatched.

I've never used the electability argument to excuse throwing all values over the side.

which is what you guys argue all the time. We don't really like Romney, but we think he can win, as long as no one notices his lies, crazy religion, slimy business practices or all the lives he's ruined.

And don't ask for his tax returns. Or about his Cayman Island bank accounts.

Snarky, the polls show Romney losing, too. If your argument is "go with the polls", then we should show all these jokers the door.

Come on, the guy got BOOED last night in SC.

and his poll numbers are collapsing as we find out about his dodgy business deals and bank account in the Caymans.

Really? We're playing the class warfare card? We're complaining the rich don't pay enough taxes?

Paging Grover Norquist!

We're attacking creative destruction? Are you trying to hand this election to Obama on a silver platter?

Crazy religion, eh? Is that the one where a guy stays married to the same woman for over 40 years, never has an affair, and raises five kids? Boy, next to Newt that sound positively NUTS!!!

1) Why should people stay in loveless marriages? I'm always curious about what religion says people should make each other miserable because an imaginary sky pixie says so.

2) Sorry, man, you get those crying AmPad workers up there, people are going to really hate Romney.

3) Creative Destruction is just another word for "Greed". Obviously, the people doing the work are getting too much of the shares of the labor... what is up with that.

"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration. Capital has its rights, which are as worthy of protection as any other rights." - Abraham Lincoln 1861.

Man, what a fuckin socialist that guy was!

Look, people are finally taking a good long look at Romney, and they see a guy who won't release his taxes, uses his wealth to hide his fortune, and says brilliant things like "I like to be able to fire people".

Actually, we don't care as long as you don't try to pass a law making us approve of it.

Which candidate is putting that in their commercials?

Hint: none of them.

Do you really think that SC voters already know the weird details of Mormonism? I doubt it. I would bet that all they are taught is that it's a cult.

One can divorce, but don't pretend to be more pious than the other guy after a couple of divorces and a bunch of extramarital affairs.

2) Sorry, man, you get those crying AmPad workers up there, people are going to really hate Romney.

And that would be right out of Obama's playbook. This is unbelievable that such a thing is coming from the purported "right".

AmPad was a stationery manufacturer. When Mitt took it over it had less than $9 million in annual revenues. Five years later, it had $200 million in annual revenues.

Then along came the internet and the end of snail mail. People don't use stationery any more. They use email and online billing.

THAT is what killed the stationary industry. To survive, you had to go to economies of scale, like Staples.

Jesus. Are you some kind of marxist? Do think buggy whip makers should be kept employed forever?

It sounds nice taken out of context, but I seriously doubt Lincoln would believe we should keep making stationery no one is using.

Look, people are finally taking a good long look at Romney, and they see a guy who won't release his taxes, uses his wealth to hide his fortune, and says brilliant things like "I like to be able to fire people".

Did you really just use the "fire people" line out of context? People are still doing that? Holy shit!

He said he would like to be able to have a choice in what health insurance he buys. He wants to have a choice in selection and not be told by the government what he must buy and from whom. He likes a customer being able to "fire" a company that does not satisfy them.

And you are still playing the class warfare card. What exactly is the problem you are having with Romney's taxes? Are you upset and want the rich to be taxed more?

Are you a Democrat? I need to be clear on this.
