Genetic Structure, Self-Identified Race/Ethnicity, and Confounding in Case-Control Association Studies

Abstract
We have analyzed genetic data for 326 microsatellite markers that were typed uniformly in a large multiethnic population-based sample of individuals as part of a study of the genetics of hypertension (Family Blood Pressure Program). Subjects identified themselves as belonging to one of four major racial/ethnic groups (white, African American, East Asian, and Hispanic) and were recruited from 15 different geographic locales within the United States and Taiwan. Genetic cluster analysis of the microsatellite markers produced four major clusters, which showed near-perfect correspondence with the four self-reported race/ethnicity categories. Of 3,636 subjects of varying race/ethnicity, only 5 (0.14%) showed genetic cluster membership different from their self-identified race/ethnicity. On the other hand, we detected only modest genetic differentiation between different current geographic locales within each race/ethnicity group. Thus, ancient geographic ancestry, which is highly correlated with self-identified race/ethnicity—as opposed to current residence—is the major determinant of genetic structure in the U.S. population. Implications of this genetic structure for case-control association studies are discussed.

this is just one of many studies that show racial groups can be identified by genetic testing. do those that deny the existence of race just ignore the evidence or do they actually disbelieve that it can be done?

Oprah got her genetic tree done so that she could find out where in africa her ancestors came from. should she believe it or not?

Who paid for this waste of money study?

Does anyone really think that people's genetic makeup changes based on where they are living?

Essentially, is this study implying that there people who believe that by moving from one continent to another, it will result in genetic evolution?

I'm going to do a study that proves that a bucket of distilled water has few bacteria before - but not after - someone takes a shit into it.

This was one of the 5 subjects whose genetic cluster membership differed from his self-identified race:

So one can find out who has red hair or is sensitive to bitter tastes from genetic testing as well.
We are all human with slightly different charistics.

If we were not the same species we could not interbreed very well now could we?

Horses and donkeys can interbreed but the outcome is a sterile mule. Kind of a dead end.

hahaha, can it be true that you somehow read the abstract and picked out a statement that sounded simplistic but didn't comprehend what the main study was about? its a hypertension study with piggyback studies that use the available data! hahaha, do you think a study would get funding if its main focus was racial identification?

what do mules have to do with racial identification by genetic markers in humans?

Of course there are racial identifiers. To pretend there isn't is assinine. Like an albino couple might randomly produce a pigmy child.

The lengths of willful stupidity some will go to simply to deny reality is quite comical. It becomes less comical when said stupidity is used to set policy.

Wasn't that what the point of your thread was?

Or did you want to discuss hypertension?

obviously I want to discuss 3631 cases out of 3636 patients that correctly matched self identified racial identity (I wonder if the 5 discordant cases had a problem with the genetic match, or the self identification).

your snide comment about a simplistic, but true, finding hinges on an assumption that genetic markers can indeed identify race. and that race is generated by evolutionary changes in separated continental populations.

Perhaps he wanted to claim that ethnicity is the result of phenotype differences created by genotype differences. Odd how that works isn't it.

I think tribes would be a better name. All humans belong to one race.

changing the definition of words doesn't really fix the situation. there were distinct groups of people long before there was a need to invent a word to describe them.

Interesting study. I've always found genetics to be fascinating. I've also found that those who deny the existence of race also believe that the Earth is flat.

actually Ravi, perhaps you are right in a way. there is a lot of political baggage involved with the word race. we could use a word to describe the continental genetic clusters that doesn't bring to mind all the other connitations. unfortunately the new word would probably just get intertwined with political correctness in a short time anyways.

I find it interesting that many of the people who deny the existence of race also believe that HIV was invented to kill off the black man.

an interesting case about genetic racial identification-

A New DNA Test Can ID a Suspect's Race, But Police Won't Touch It

In the summer of 2002, the FBI, the Baton Rouge Police Department, and several other agencies began a massive search for a serial killer suspected of murdering three women. Based on an FBI profile and an eyewitness report, they upended southern Louisiana looking for a white man who drives a white pickup, collecting DNA from more than 1,000 Caucasian males. They found nothing. Meanwhile, the killer struck again.

In March 2003, investigators turned to Tony Frudakis, a molecular biologist who said he could determine the suspect's race by analyzing his DNA. Uncertain about the science, the police asked Frudakis to take a blind test: They sent him DNA swabs from 20 people to see if he could identify their races. He nailed every one.

On a conference call a few weeks later, Frudakis reported his results on their killer. "Your guy could be African-American or Afro-Caribbean, but there is no chance that this is a Caucasian." There was a prolonged silence, followed by a flurry of questions. They all came down to this: Would Frudakis bet his life on his results? Absolutely.

read the story, the black prosecutor's comment at the end is very enlightening about race relations.

Just call a spade a spade and quit worrying about it.

Jeesh!

Determining "race" was originally an attempt to prove dominance and excuse oppression.

The entire subject is pretty retarded.

Humans are all one race...and differences between tribes, while interesting for health reasons, are basically meaningless.

Sure you can tell. Pretty soon we'll be able to tell all kinds of amazing things about folks thanks to their genes. We need to do everything we can to prevent genetic "racism".

Despite my love of variety in women I look soo forward to the day folks from different races, tribes, and sides of the river are interbred enough we can't tell the difference between them.

I still don't understand the point of your thread.

Are you saying that we have to run a full DNA genomic analysis of an individual to figure out if they are African?

Seriously...blatantly state your point so that we can move on from this cryptic bullshit.
