Here, there, and everywhere.
William Westmoreland

Despite a stellar career as a U.S. Army officer, General William Childs Westmoreland is, unfortunately, best remembered for prevaricating about the situations surrounding the Vietnam War.

Criticized for giving positive assessments of worsening conditions in Vietnam, he was ridiculed by the public and media for deliberately deceiving President Lyndon B. Johnson, to maintain support of the war.

In his defense.....the French made the same mistake thinking the Vietnamese forces would be easy to defeat

Westmoreland was an old school general trying to use large scale WWll ground tactics against a hit and run guerrilla army.

He never understood how to fight the indigenous insurgents, let alone defeat them. ...

Just give me 100,000 more troops and we will be home by Christmas

He kept requesting more troops. Thousands of them.

As if it were a bottomless pit.

He tried to win a ground war without winning the Air War. Even though the US Navy, Marines and Air Force had the capability to completely own the skies, until Abrams came along, they were never allowed to do so. Stupid things like, if the enemy fighters are on the ground, leave them alone. If you fly in on a bombing mission (Hanoi) you must fly the same routes, the same altitudes and at the same times. You can only fire on a ground installation if it's fired on you. The majority of the residence of the Hanoi Hilton were Air Force F-105 pilots. The next bunch were Navy Attack Bird Pilots. Unless you are willing to neutralize the Air, getting more troops on the ground only means you had better order more body bags.

Bomb your way to victory

Never understood how such a shit could rise through the ranks

This is a problem for foreign policy and our budget. It always has been and always will be.

We have no general warfare clause nor any common offense clause.

Our welfare clause is General not Common and we have an express Commerce Clause.

On the other side of the coin you had the Harvard educated whiz kid Sec. of Defense Robert McNamara who micromanaged the Vietnam war using the latest and newest in egg head system analysis from the White House.

Coupled with Gen. Westmoreland ineptly leading the Army on the ground, and McNamara directing the action from his Ivory tower. The prosecution of the Vietnam war was doomed to failure. ....

Never should have gotten involved in the first place

We turned a Civil War into a Cold War

You helped the French?

After all, they helped you win that little rebellion of yours. :71:

It was all Frances fault anyway

They insisted on reinstating their Colonial Empire after WWII and the Vietnamese rebelled

However the war did enrich the MIC in a massive way. Like all wars it was a total waste.
