Fusion Energy Will Change Everything

Where are you getting electric service for your home? ... ha ha ha ha ha ha ... the government tells you who and it's strictly illegal to seek it from any other source ... ha ha ha ha ha ...

You want six sets of utility poles and six sets of overhead wires and six sets of drops nailed to your house ... and then all six companies will sit down behind closed doors and SET PRICES to guaranty profits ... BIG profits ... capitalism at it's finest ...
Actually it’s a deregulated market with respect to electric providers. Same thing happened to interstate pipelines decades ago.

I get that we are no longer a society based upon free markets. I get that it’s an illusion. That doesn’t mean it’s good to do more of it. It’s not. It’s a bad fucking idea.

I don't have government telling me where to get my electricity, you are confused.

Tell us how many companies you can choose from ... I've lived about everyplace in the United States, and every place there was only one power company ... take it or go without electricity ...

I won't ask where you live or why you don't have a State Public Utility Commission ... I don't want to know ...

There's worse ideas out there ... and corruption is far worse in business than in government ...

I agree that free market is almost always best ... being a carpenter in a fairly competive market, there was real need of government oversight on some of these bozoes ... absolute thieves ... stealing from unwary homeowners ... and landlording I was on the other side, without government oversight ... it was awful the things I did for money ... throwing babies into snowbanks ... all perfectly lawful ... see how rents are going, there's your deregulation for you ... filthy lucker lukar lucre ...

You're an engineer ... you know some of your regulations make good sense and everybody should be following them ... when one ocean falls into another, there's an engineer to blame ...

At least three

Socialized, in your dreams.

Socialized is solar and wind. Paid to be built by the government.

Bonneville Power Administration was built and is owned by the United States Army Corps of Engineers ... a government entity ... the transmission lines are also owned by The Corps ... a government entity ... and the retail distribution is usually performed by the City ... a government entity ... there is no private business involved at any point (except maybe the printing of the monthly bills and other little trivial things like toilet paper) ...

City-folk have no other choice ... rural customers usually form local co-ops ... and there are a number of cities that have private companies to distribute retail electricity ... the important part you skipped over was the CHEAPEST ELECTRIC RATES IN THE COUNTRY ... rates to smelt aluminum with ... nowhere along the line is there profit ... none at all ...

How much do you pay for a kW-Hr? ... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ...

Nope....
TVA is gubbermint power.
But it is distributed and sold by private entities.

I've never pulled power from TVA ... except maybe in Western Carolina ... we're talking about BPA, and Western Oregon ...

CRAP ... Tennessee does have cheaper rates than Oregon ... it's only Washington State that has the cheapest electricity in the United States ... my mistake ... {Cite} ... I should have looked this up before I posted that nonsense above ...[/URL]

I did not skip over anything.

How much do I pay, a lot more because of renewables.

Socialism? You can call it that if you like but, the USA is a country that has capitalism as a basis for our economy..

Laugh all you like, capitalism is all the good in this world.

Washington State's `cheapest rates in the nation` is because of renewables ... the Columbia River keeps flowing ... cheap electricity means more aluminum for Boeing Inc. ...

Business would sell this electricity to the highest bidder ... California ... leaving nothing for the Pacific Northwest ... and your dividend payments will double ... I get it ... doesn't make it right ... just filthy lucre ...

Hydro is not renewables, count it if you like. Some agencys include hydro as renewable because otherwise the total output of renewables is pathetic.

TVA is how our gubbermint produces plutonium or enriched uranium for our nuclear weapons. They have several breeder reactors that produce them.

Well....actually our nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers produce the plutonium from the compact reactors. They get the plutonium removed from time to time when they get "refueled". Then usually shipped off to France for reprocessing and refinement. Well....at least they used to. They might have decided not to do so anymore. I haven't kept up as it's kinda boring.

But otherwise TVA burns a lot of coal to produce electricity. It comes from Virginia and Kentucky. The train boxcars are many and miles long when delivering the coal.

Then for what ARE most accelerators used?
Physics research...

So far it's all been theoretical research that hasn't really helped with anything substantial. Because quarks and atom particle makeup doesn't really help create useful materials. At that level it's all what a proton or neutron is made of. As if it matters. (It doesn't)

There are areas of research that are fruitful and ones that aren't. Particle Accelerators are very expensive to build let alone operate. And there isn't much in the way of knowledge that they can provide. Especially when there are other types of research that can be utilized today. The ones that have been built have given us the answers....bigger aren't going to do better or give us better answers. Just cost more.

It doesn't matter if we see a Higgs Boson Particle. (If it truly exists) its not going to change our lives in any fashion today or tomorrow. Nor is it going to give us new energy sources or materials or communications.

I was talking about the Tennessee Valley Authority ... I thought that was mainly hydro-power ... Wikipedia agrees it seems ...

BPA has nuclear ... and has had nuclear from Hanford since the beginning of nuclear power ... plus Idaho Falls and Trojan nuclear facilities ... today we have a big wind farm and a new solar farm in the near future ... all the coal plants were forced to shut down under threat of US Army artillery attack (not really, the one and only coal plant was losing money and the owners jumped at the chance to shut down) ...

However ... BPA is hydro hydro hydro ... everything else is a hobby to them ...
