Cable networks barely compare to the broadcast networks for viewership. It's all hype by the cable news entities. They average one to three million viewers compared to NBC getting ten million per day for its nightly news broadcast. Combined with ABC and CBS, the number reaches well over twenty million, ten times the viewership of the cable networks. But the vast majority of Americans get their news from the half hour long local affiliate stations that focus on local news, weather and sports and add just tidbits of national or international news. When big national or international stories break and the viewers want to get more than the tidbits on local affiliates, they are likely to just keep the channel on that leads to national news. They do not switch over to the cable news broadcast and the vast majority are not interested in the commentary and talking heads at MSNBC, CNN, or FOX. Even the magazine type shows like 60 Minutes get much higher viewers rating than any of the cable network shows.

That would be why cable news stations don't compete with free over-the-air stations. Of course more people watch broadcast news, it really helps that its completely free to anyone with a TV and rabbit ears. But cable news networks are exclusively for paying customers, and so paying customers tend to watch specific things. The fact that 3 times more people watch FNC than CNN or MSNBC is an indication that the latter two are indeed fading into the abyss.

So it's a HUGE deal that FNC is three times more popular than their nearest competitor.
