I've had plenty to say to some of the Jane Fonda types, and to the VC cheerleaders among them in particular. (They sure had plenty to say to me and the rest of us vets when we got home).

Now, I've got something to say to you. I do not care when, where, or how long you served. I do not care for the way some of my fellow Americans have abused and misused the freedom I and every other vet fought for, and 58,272 of my brothers and sisters died for in Vietnam. Regardless of that, neither you nor I have earned the "right" to disrespect or turn our backs on our country because of their actions. "Amerika" my arse! I worry about my country; sometimes I despair for her future, on account of some of the actions of my fellow Americans; sometimes I am ashamed of the path my fellow Americans have set her on. I worry, for the future of the constitution I swore to support and defend; but by God, I still love my country, I am still honored to have served her, worn her uniform, and fought for her, and I'll fight for her again, if need be. She's worth it, in spite of abusive citizens and feckless politicians, and that is the way it is going to be, until they put her flag on my coffin. Now, if you took the oath, and you find you can no longer stand up for it, then by God, stand down!

We all took the same oath and it didn't expire when we were discharged. Were old now but we still have the same responsibility to guarantee lasting freedom for future generations. If our freedom is threatened we need to go out with a fight.

Some are intellectual elitists, some are cowards, some are communists...and some of them don't know any better. You, on the other hand, DO know better. Their behavior is NO excuse for you to trash our country, despise our constitution, disrespect our flag, and otherwise behave disgracefully!

We vets took a solemn oath, not to any political party or leader, not to any ideology, not to the land, or even to the American people, but to the constitution. As veterans, we still have a special obligation to be an example to our fellow citizens; to show the same unselfish devotion to that oath we did when we wore the uniform; not just when things go our way, but also when they do not; not just in times of ease, but especially in times of adversity; not just when it is easy, but especially when it is hard. WE, of all Americans, should not and cannot be summer soldiers and sunshine patriots. When others shrink from duty, we should rise to it. When others sink to the lowest common denominator, we should rise above it. When our fellow citizens do wrong, it is not enough to condemn or criticize; WE ought to be up front, out front, showing them the way, the right way, to be an American, NOT acting like the very people whose behavior we condemn. WE, of all Americans, should be standing up for the ideals embodied in the constitution we swore to support and defend. WE should be supporting America, not trashing her. If America is in trouble, WE ought to be doing our best to fix her, not making the problems worse. We do not need to TELL our fellow Americans what true patriotism is; we need to be SHOWING them!

Once, we stood for a higher standard; we stepped up, to do what others would not, or could not. Our duty now, is no less. If WE quit on this nation, how can we expect others to do anything else? The way I see it, with your attitude, you might as well be walking point for those who want to destroy America, and that's a damn disgrace!

There's no question our country is in trouble.The social revolution that took place in the sixties and seventies did some good, and a lot of harm, and we have not yet sorted out the results. America has stumbled; in many ways, she has lost her moral compass. The political, economic and social fabric of the nation is torn, and we cannot be sure when or if one or more of the ethnic, political, economic, religious or regional divides we have may burst, possibly with disastrous consequences. It sounds pretty bleak, and while America has survived worse before, some question whether the society we have built is resilient enough to survive this time.

I don't have all the answers as to how we fix this, but I do know how NOT to fix it. Giving up, consigning our republic to the garbage can, and heading for the bunkers is NOT going to do anything, except help make the destruction of this nation a self-fulfilling prophecy.

America is still fundamentally a good country, and a tolerant country; that is both our greatest weakness, and our greatest strength. The only thing that has kept us alive as a nation for two hundred and thirty five years is the dedication of those men and women who have put Duty, Honor, and Country above all else. Just because those words and the ideal behind them have gone out of fashion among some folks is no reason to abandon them now. If we do, we will have betrayed the very ideals we were willing to go to war for, willing to fight for, kill for, and die for, and make no mistake, we will have failed our country, and our oath, just as those who have betrayed her, refused to serve her, and subverted her constitution have failed her. It has been said that, "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"; those words have never been more true than today!

Now, you and those like you can forget your oath, give up, hide in your bunker, and look out for yourselves if you want to. I do not know what the future holds. I do not know if I will have to fight another war for America, or not; but if it comes to that, I will go down standing up and fighting for my country, not cowering in a hole like a rat awaiting the end. In the meantime, I am going to do what I can, when I can, where I can, to try to prevent that day from ever coming.

Yes, we lost....because you played their game. You 'protested" these people? Of course they succeeded...succeeded in getting you to waste your effort. Did you expect to silence them? If that tactic actually worked we wouldn't have the Westboro bunch still trying to disrupt funerals, now would we? I'm not sure, according to our constitution, that we even should try to silence them; the better approach is to make their message even more irrelevant and less appealing than it already is.

Did you vote? Did you help get out the vote for the candidate of your choice? Did you help with the campaign? Did you organize, or put out signs? Did you help persuade your neighbors to vote for a good candidate? Did you back good people for your local government, your county and state government offices?

Have you helped make your community a better place? Did you volunteer for the fire department or rescue squad? Did you coach little league? Did you help teach kids to read, or lead a Boy Scout troop? Little things, sure; but they make for a better community, one that is less susceptible to commie-lib ideology. That crap thrives on hate and discontent; it loves places where people don't know their neighbors (or their local officials); it likes disarray and mistrust; it recruits latchkey kids who haven't got good adult role models. All those things are like fertilizer for that poisonous ideology; what have you done, to make your community a less hospitable place for it to grow in?

Be a friend, be a mentor; be someone the neighborhood kids (and maybe some of their parents too) can look up to. Be a man of character, keep your word; be a leader, and a shameless patriot. Stand up tall, fly Old Glory, and salute her with pride. Serve your community, just as you served your country. Step up when something needs doing, then do it with enthusiasm. Do that, and I promise you, you will have influence; your opinions will matter to your neighbors. Make yourself count; make your life count, for something besides griping, protesting and bitching. Do it, because that oath you took has no expiration date.
