What you mistake for selfishness is simply self reliance, Chris...something this country used to be known for. Your "utopia" is OWS protesters demanding free schooling, the abolition of debt and a guaranteed living wage whether one works or not. Your "utopia" is a steadily growing underclass, that contributes little to society... that pay little in taxes yet have the power to impose higher taxes on those that have become successful. Your "utopia" is modeled on Europe...a region now coming to us for bailouts to keep themselves afloat. So answer me this, Chris...who will "we" be going to for a bailout when your progressive "utopia" has bankrupted the US?

For the Republicans it always boils down to blame the poor....either people on welfare or illegal immigrants.

For Republicans America is a platform for individual fulfillment. Here is the catch: the Individual is defined in the narrowest possible terms. Any notion of the "The Public Good" is seen as "Socialism" (socialism being anything the government does for the non-wealthy). The Free Market will fix New Orleans levees. The Free Market will effectively control the amount of derivative based risk Wall Street will take. The Free Market will get us off imported oil(rather than spending decades making terrorists stronger). The Free Market will keep our rivers clean. The Free Market will make healthcare more efficient. The Free Market won't bribe Washington in order to increase it's profit margin. We don't need to worry about "The Public Good", individual selfishness driven by short term profit is a utopian reflex.

But the world doesn't work that way. Selfishness harms society....tears it apart....destroys the world economy....spills millions of barrels of oil in the Gulf of Mexico.....tears a hole in the ozone...creates a garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas...melts the North Polar ice cap.....creates massive deficits by giving huge tax breaks for the wealthy....

But the Republicans celebrate this selfishness. It is their core value. For them greed is good.

They do. Democrats are also on the corporate take, and also serve the interests of the rich; perhaps not as blatantly as the Republicans, but that's how the game of good cop/bad cop is played. The owning class can't achieve its ends just by buying out one party, because then the people would vote for the other one, the one that represents their interests. Only by making sure that NO party represents the interests of the people, that BOTH parties are hired servants of the rich, can they achieve the plutocracy they want.

If Chris had said "conservatives" instead of "Republicans," there would have been no valid response possible.

I would argue that the progressive caucus represents the people, but you are right, a lot of conservative Democrats are no different than the Republicans.

Since the average American now describes themselves as center-right, Chris...how do you figure the progressive caucus "represents" them? The progressive caucus represents a minority of Americans who feel that "their" agenda should take precedent over the wishes of the rest of Americans.

You lack knowledge of the human creature. A class in both sociology 101 & psych 101 would really help you understand human nature. Human nature cannot be altered for it is not of the flesh. The socialistic or communalistic society you fantasize of has never existed, for it is impossible to exist. Adolf Hitler came closest to fulfilling your fantasy with his national socialist agenda, but Adolf failed to realize that human nature was INDIVIDUALLY based, leading to a catastophic loss of human life.. Sure, one can educate/train people but one cannot educate/train human nature!
I would strongly suggest 101 courses in the academic fields I listed above. You can acquire these classes of study at any local community college, though tuition might be a little steep. Once you have a basic understanding of human nature individually(psych 101) & human nature in societal/group(soc 101) you will better be able to see why humans require minimal government & maximum Liberty.
