Just a reminder, this has been going on in Canada for decades. It's called subsidy, but instead, the levels of government just grant the money and try and do it on the hush hush. When Trump talks about abuses of NAFTA, this is a big one.

Might be time for Trump to keep his promise regarding tariffs for automobiles made in other countries? It would certainly save American jobs AND Canadian taxpayers the burden of buying jobs for others.

Honda getting government help to revamp Ontario plants

Honda is spending more than $400 million to upgrade its Alliston, Ont., facilities to build new models of the Civic and the CR-V, with financial support also coming from the federal and Ontario governments.

Ottawa and Queen's Park will each contribute $41.8 million. The government money will be in the form of grants to Honda.

The automaker will use the funds to prepare the main assembly lines for the next-generation models of the Civic and CR-V, and to complete a new paint shop at the Alliston plant, which is about 100 kilometres northwest of Toronto....

Honda Canada Inc. president and CEO Jerry Chenkin said the new paint shop will help the company cut greenhouse gas emissions from its paint process by 44 per cent.

The federal government said its financial support will be doled out over three years.

That 41.8 million will barely cover Honda's carbon tax energy expenses. And that's for just one year.

Thats both levels, the province and the feds, so 83.6M total. That's just for three years of buying jobs. Last time they made such an investment it cost taxpayers $140k PER job.

Also, three months ago, feds and province of Ontario gave $550M to GM. My guess again is that Trump is aware of these tactics, Canada has a reputation of buying jobs while innovating little.

This doesn't even consider the history of Canada placing state operative in upper management and executive positions in both Canadian, U.S and foreign businesses. All in the effort to undermine foreign competition and obtain government funding benefits.

It's okay to bribe companies when Trump does it, and not okay when others do it. Haven't you heard?

Trump doesn't bribe, he threatens and shames. This doesn't cost taxpayers a nickel, and instead of having the rest of the country bail out these companies and give them taxpayers money, he intends to recoup revenue from them when they are taxed at the border.

The free market has limits, the pendulum has swung far too much to one side. Mexico and China specifically have exploited trade with the U.S. Canada not too far behind when we consider the jobs taken, not just trade surpluses.

What the fuck???

He bribed Carrier. Haven't you heard?

This doesn't cost taxpayers a nickel

Apparently you don't know what "with financial support also coming from the federal and Ontario governments" means.

The labor force in the U.S.and Canada isn't much different so why would a U.S. based company transfer jobs to Canada? When Trump makes it friendly and easy once again for U.S. corporations to stay in the United States there will be a resurgence of jobs and the economy will go crazy.

This is the problem with titles of trade agreements like 'Free Trade.' They are not actually free - they are fraught with governments playing favorites. As soon as we even talk about adjusting our policy because of those practices everyone goes nuts.

How Donald Trump got Carrier to stay

Carrier was given money to stay.
