The family of the Black teenager who was shot in the head after ringing the doorbell of the wrong home in Kansas City, Missouri, last year, filed a lawsuit Monday against the White man who shot him and the residential homeowners association where the house is located.

The correct procedure would have been to crack the door open, keeping your weapon out of view, ask "May I help you?", then assess the situation. Read the guy's intentions: Is he nervous? How is he dressed? What's he doing with his hands? Eyes never killed anyone, so watch the hands.

Of course, you don't know if there could be two other individuals standing off to the side of the door, waiting to barge in on you, in which case, you'd better be ready to react pretty quickly. But in most cases, home invaders aren't going to hang around very long if any shooting starts. You probably should also know that most walls and doors don't offer much protection against being hit, but most door jambs are pretty solid.
