I read the book some time ago and thought it was "meh".

When the film was announced I thought it was going to be a dud.

I happened to rent it out on Amazon last night and was quite impressed.

It was remarkably faithful to the book, but the acting and special effects actually enhanced the story (Something that seldom happens).

If you are a scifi fan and have a little time to kill..you should dig.

I loved all the books - mostly Speaker for the Dead - including the Shadow series.
I was really worried that I was going to hate the movie (Starship Troopers nightmares danced in my head.) But I was pleasantly surprised. Of course they had to cut a lot out - but I could see why and I think they did a pretty faithful job with it.
