In the 1970's, it was generally accepted that Mr. John was as straight as the day is long. Bernie Taupin was considered gay however.

As well as I believe his inner struggles and bad childhood is what made him write such great songs. After he came out, and became a multi-millionaire, enshrined in hall of fame, knighted etc. etc, - he lost the pain, and therefore lost the ability to write such deep material.

I think that happens a lot. But then very few artists have an unending supply of great work. Norman Greenbaum wrote "Spirit in the Sky" but nothing else of note. But to me it still entitles him to a seat on Olympus.
