Imagine there are no humans and the climate changes very slowly and becomes drier. The forests slowly became scattered trees separated by grassland. The chimps that were better walkers and hunters did better and had more offspring than others. Over thousands of generations those tree dwelling chimps would likely become more human-like, walking upright over long distances.
