Edward Bernays was way ahead of his time. He knew how people could be manipulated by propaganda and we see examples of this on the web with political message boards that claim to be objective while ridiculing free speech; it demonstrates the dark side of information sharing. All political opinion is just that, opinion, but some opinion is considered threatening to an established system of true believers unable to play by the rules of open mindedness and common sense.

One way to hobble problematic opinions is to create a "trash bin" strategy that imbues some free speech with a negative shade of distinction. It is a way to automatically smear opposing points of view with state mockery and stop intelligent discussion in its tracks. This is what "Conspiracy Theory" threads are for.

Some free speech based on personal observation runs counter to the tactics of some social media. It is afraid of offending the herd mentality of users that base their views on infantile emotions not objective perceptions. Bernays knew this and he did not try to hide it, instead advising power seeking organizations to use distortions of free speech to their advantage. Here is an example of the kinds of people that replace free speech and intelligent debate with emotional childish outrage:

These are the fodder for sites like Twitter and Facebook, but they also subtly populate other message boards as tools of the Bernays method. The low functioning minds of sheep will never see what is there; instead, they wait to be directed by the dogs that herd them. Bernays warned us about these people, and they will always be here. There is no coherent argument against free speech in a free democracy but using contempt for different thinking that does not follow state dogma can be effective. Bernays knew this and he got rich teaching others to use it.

So, when you see a "Conspiracy Theory" category on a website realize that it is a tactic to stop discussion. People are beginning to tire of this bedridden foolishness.
