Before the courier came to his suburban Edmonton home this week with a letter explaining that his boss wants him fired, high school teacher Lynden Dorval thought his principal had bowed to the media firestorm.

Three months ago, Mr. Dorval went public with his struggle against Ross Sheppard High School’s no-zero policy, making him a lightning rod for a debate on how to teach a generation often billed as having a sense of entitlement.

But on Tuesday, the letter from the superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools informed him his principal, Ron Bradley, requested his termination for “his obvious neglect of duty as a professional teacher, his repeated insubordination and his continued refusal to obey lawful orders.”

I am a firm believer of keeping standards high and following the rules as schools are the first authority students come into contact with and ultimately find themselves following the rules of society in general so they had better get used to it. But the teacher may have gone a step too far, for giving a zero for incomplete work, he didn't give credit for work completed.

If a test was not completed, any questions not answered would naturally be marked wrong, bringing the grade down. That could result in an "F", but likely not a zero. Same with assignments. They are still facing the consequences of their actions. If the assignment or test was not attempted at all, by Goodness, a zero was earned.

So, the "No Zero" Policy is ludicrous on the part of the board. If an assignment was not done, a Zero is the appropriate grade. But at the sme time, a partially attempted assignment should have partial credit, although most likely a drastically lowered grade. No playing games with the student, He earns what he gets.

A teacher being fired? Republicans must be so "proud".

Romney - fewer teachers a "good" thing.

This is how fucked up the unions are when firing a teacher. A teacher here in Jacksonville a few years ago was suspected of being a child molester .. Did they fire him. NO they moved him to another school a elementary school at that. This year he got got caught MOLESTING a child. They still did not fire him right away they had to have a meeting. He was arrested and they still had to have a meeting to see if it was OK to fire a child molester .. So UNIONS support child molestation over children..

Get rid of all teachers. Just give the kids the book and tell them to study on their own and show up for the test.

Gosh I would think in the Peoples' Republic of Canadia the teachers would have a strong union like in the U.S. so they couldn't get fired for anything short of raping a student, after a dozen or so years of appeals that is.

No wonder there are so many adults out there who can't spell to save their lives. If the kid fails, fail them. None of this passing them so as not to hurt their precious feelings.

Bloody hell. Over here, you can't use red ink to mark a students work. Oh no, because red pen is associated with failing. Must use a different color instead!

We should always fire people on unproven accusations...
