A Finnish ship has set the record for the earliest crossing of the notorious Northwest Passage, the Arctic route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Icebreaker MSV Nordica was at sea for 24 days, travelling more than 6,214 miles to make the record.

It arrived at Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on 29 July, having set off from Vancouver, Canada on 5 July, the Associated Pressreported.

Arctic tundra contaminated with mercury pollution, scientists warn

The previous record was set by Canadian Coast Guard ship Louis L. St-Laurent in 2008. It arrived in Point Barrow, off Alaska, on 30 July, having also set off on 5 July from Newfoundland.

But the route the Nordica travelled, in the opposite direction, was even longer.

Passengers on board the Nordica reported seeing sea birds, seals, whales and a polar bear.

Ship sets record for earliest crossing of notorious Northwest Passage

Every decade we see earlier transits of this passage. And transits with ships that are not designed for the Arctic. But, of course, the deniers will tell you that nothing is happening.

And this has what to do with the transit of the Northwest Passage, fool? You idiot 'Conservatives' haven't even the brains to address the issue. And you, expecially. Most of the 'Conservatives' on this board would happily lynch you if they thought they could get away with it.

Really? Who says nothing is happening? The sane an informed among us acknowledge global temperatures are rising, but also understand that climate science is realtively young science and is INCREDIBLY complicated with literally 1000's of variables. There are several theories to explain many past climate events, so it doesn't stand to reason we can have only one answer for why global temperatures are rising now.

And being a 100,000 ton ICE BREAKER with 4 engines had nothing to do with the passage..

Your a fucking Idiot Old Crock... Normal, unprotected ships cant even attempt the passage... Your comparing old wooden ships to a state of the art ice breaker designed for this type of shit.. Even your own article states that the ice was thickening and they were worried that even they would be unable to complete the voyage.

More alarmist drivel with no meaning..

LOL Silly Billy once again earns his moniker.

This was the earliest an ice breaker has ever made the passage. That was clear in what was posted. And, almost for sure, unprotected ships like the luxury liner that transited the Passage last year, will be transiting the passage in less than a month. They are already booking passages for it.

You ignorant prick... The ice breaker was there to Shepard this ship.. It was a god damn publicity stunt.. I wish they had all become stuck in the ice.

The bull shit is deep with isn't it..

Being that he stinks at engineering as badly as he does at physics, Billy just declared that little icebreakers weighs 100,000 tons.

Um, no. That's more like a 9000 ton ship. And that only if it was fully loaded out while hauling supplies to sea platforms. Empty, it's more like a 3000 ton ship.

So, off by more than a factor of 10. For Billy, that's more accurate than usual.
