Do the Irish abroad live up to their drunken stereotype?

The Irish community in New Zealand have been angered by reports in The Press newspaper that blamed Irish fans for drunk and disorderly behaviour at the second Test match between Ireland and New Zealand in Christchurch last Saturday.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, head of Christchurch’s team policing unit, was quoted saying that most of the troublemakers at the match were Irish supporters who “demonstrated they can’t handle alcohol”.

A local newspaper for the Irish community The Irish Champion and the Facebook group Irish People Living in New Zealand have condemned the report as an unfair generalisation, supported by comments left on both sites by Irish fans who were at Saturday’s game.

Like most stereotypes there is a grain of truth and whole shamozzle of hearsay, lies and racist crap.

The rugger buggers went overboard; most seemed to have been Irish who are living and working In Aus and NZ were there are problems with young people binge drinking and acting out.

The original "drunk Irish" stereotype emerged in 50s\60s Britain where thousands of Irishmen went to work hard graft jobs like construction etc and who were lonely and who found comfort in cheap booze.

As a person who lives in Ireland, I can tell you that drink is a huge problem. Drink related medical problems costs the government a huge amount of money yearly.
