Do Republicans really believe children, the disabled and the elderly are "leeches"??

SNAPCharts2.png

We all know that taking care of children, the disabled and the elderly is more than just feeding them. Those that take care of two of the three know how much a hundred dollars of food stamps means.

All this GOP ranting about food stamps. Do they believe children, the disabled and the elderly don't deserve help? Do Republicans think they should just quietly go away?
If this Admin had done ANYTHING significant to strengthen our economy - specifically the job market - there wouldn't be a continuous growth in SNAP recipients.
You want MORE government dependents.
We want LESS.....and we're chastised for it
More jobs are being automated every day. What are we supposed to do with the ones who go hungry because they can't afford to update their job scales fast enough to keep up with progress. There are no longer enough jobs for everyone, yet everyone wants to be fed. Do we simply let them starve to death?

It is amazing how ignorance on the left can just grow and grow and grow. Let's start with the op. Like most households of the us, they are made up of the children, the elderly, and the handicapped. Social Security Disability Enrollment Rising Due To Demographic Trends: CBO

"The study, by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, found that the biggest jumps in the disabled population came from aging Baby Boomers. From 1996 through 2009 -- "the approximate period during which the baby-boom generation entered their 50s -- the share of disabled worker benefits awarded to older workers (age 45 and older) rose from 67 percent to 76 percent," the report said.

Meanwhile, the share of benefits going to younger workers -- between the ages of 25 to 44 -- fell from 31 percent to 22 percent.

"Baby boomers' aging would have boosted enrollment in the DI program even if no other factors had changed," the report said.

Add to that the fact that more women have entered the workforce since 1970, boosting the working population and creating a larger pool of people who can become disabled.

A change in the law during the Reagan administration that allowed more people with mental disabilities and musculo-skeletal problems to qualify also increased the number of people on disability. In 1990, such people accounted for 38 percent of workers in the SSDI program. In 2010, the number had risen to 54 percent."

If there is a citizenry on this planet that does NOT have an entitlement mentality, it is the American people. American workers receive less benefits, paid leave, health care and take less vacation time than any other people. American workers take pride in the quality of their work and their work ethic.

What Romney said is a gross insult and reveals a dangerous mindset. He reeks of contempt for middle class working people and the poor.

Who are the 47%?

Federal budget and Census data show that, in 2010, 91 percent of the benefit dollars from entitlement and other mandatory programs went to the elderly (people 65 and over), the seriously disabled, and members of working households. People who are neither elderly nor disabled — and do not live in a working household — received only 9 percent of the benefits.

Moreover, the vast bulk of that 9 percent goes for medical care, unemployment insurance benefits (which individuals must have a significant work history to receive), Social Security survivor benefits for the children and spouses of deceased workers, and Social Security benefits for retirees between ages 62 and 64. Seven out of the 9 percentage points go for one of these four purposes.

80 percent of the workforce has seen their wages decline in real terms over the last quarter-century, and the average household has seen 40 percent of its wealth disappear during the Great Recession. Through it all, families never asked for a handout from anyone, especially Washington. They were left to go on their own, working harder, squeezing nickels, and taking care of themselves. But their economic boats have been taking on water for years, and now the crisis has swamped millions of middle class families. ref ref

The bull here is strictly from people like this poster. Almost 70 percent of the us budget is entitlements and income support, that comes to two trillion dollars in one year which is probably more than the next 20 countries combined spend on such things. Just like Mexico eh? Well I guess that is why all the Mexicans are trying to get into this country. You can't argue with people who will not acknowledge the facts. Yes we do have a gargantuan welfare state to the tune of over two trillion dollars. Wake the f up.

Social Security and Medicare have added ZERO dollars to the national debt...

People receiving aid mostly believe they deserve it and those who don't wish to give them free stuff are selfish assholes. I drive Medicaid patients to their doctor appointments. Only a few of which appreciate it. The rest get upset if I am too early or too late like I'm their personal valet.

I last took a guy in to a doctor who refused to replace his feeding tube because he didn't take his medicaid insurance plan. All he knew was that the selfish asshole refused to help him. He doesn't recognize the fact that long lines of people go to that doctors aid every day and get turned away because the doctor has to be able to pay his rent in order to stay in business and thus can't afford to give freebies to those who want them.

We have to draw the line somewhere. What we as a society can afford to give away free and what we can't. Just because we are able to do something doesn't mean we should, even if the alternative is your death.

You wanna pick and choose which corporate subsidies should be stopped?

The jobs that are there require 4 year degrees. 2 year degrees no longer matter. More people have them than are needed. As more people get 4 year degrees they too will someday become unneeded. Asians with 4 year degrees work for peanuts, why pay an American a living wage if you don't have to.

This is a very real issue -

If we are not yet at the point where we simply cannot create enough jobs for everyone, we will soon be.

Then what?

And, we really MUST stop corporate welfare.

Let's stop all corporate subsidies. Let's also create a repatriation holiday so companies like Walmart and Apple will bring their money stateside and spend it here rather than elsewhere.

The government should not be promoting socialized bullshit by giving companies handouts who waste money on such things. The market will decide when the time is right for such things as in electric cars, etc.

I'm a compassionate libertarian. I don't like wasting money on unnecessary bullshit but I also don't want people starving to death in the streets.

Maybe we tax those who work to pay for those who don't work to work.

Reading without reflecting is like eating without digesting.
Edmund Burke

You falsely attributed the rise in DI to Obama, who made no changes to the law. YOU need to try again, and READ the fucking study YOU posted which reinforced what I posted...

11.5.2 Changes in Medical Eligibility Criteria
In 1984, the U.S. Congress passed legislation requiring the Social Security
Administration to use a broader definition of disability when deciding
whether to accept or reject a DI application. The legislation required SSA
to liberalize its screening of mental illness by placing more weight on functional
factors (e.g., ability to work) than on medical ones. Additionally, the
SSA had to give added weight to pain and related factors that were not previously
considered in the disability determination. This latter change influenced
certain diagnosis categories much more than others. Applicants
with common musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain and arthritis
would now have a greater probability of qualifying for DI benefits.

Following these changes, the fraction of DI awardees with a mental disorder
or a musculoskeletal condition as their primary diagnosis increased
substantially. From 1982 to 1983, just 28 percent of all DI awards went to
individuals in one of these two diagnosis categories, but twenty years later
that share had increased to 52 percent. These changes are summarized in
table 11.8, which lists the fraction of awards by diagnosis category just before
the change in medical eligibility criteria and twenty years later. This
table also shows that a much smaller fraction of DI awardees now qualify
because of cancer (neoplasms) or because of circulatory conditions (e.g.,
heart disease, hypertension, stroke, etc.), the two most common diagnoses
in the early 1980s.

It doesn't matter what Republicans think others are, or even what any of us think they are.

Truth is not dictated by what you think someone is, or is not.

If I call you a Mercedes... does that make you a Mercedes? What if everyone says you are a Mercedes? Does that make you a Mercedes? But what if we all get together and vote for someone, who says you are a Mercedes? Does that make you a Mercedes?

No, none of that opinion, or what people do, or do not, call you, changes what you are. You are.... what you are. Whether you, or anyone else, does or does not, agree with it.

If I only eat veggies.... I am by definition a Vegetarian. But no one calls me that.... doesn't matter. I am a vegetarian, whether anyone calls me a vegetarian or not.

Similarly... if you live your life off of the hard work of others, while not doing anything yourself.....

Hello? Need more explanation? Does not matter what anyone thinks. Not me, not you, not Obama, not the Republicans or Democrats. If you live off the work of others..... while not working for your own life....

Remember that guy in college, that didn't have a job, but always crashed on your couch, and drank your beer, and paid nothing for either.....? We had a 'title' for him right?

TOTAL bullshit. Social Security and Medicare are PAID FOR. As a matter of FACT, if those programs ever do add to the debt, the benefits MUST be cut BY LAW!

Social Security and the federal budget

Social Security operates independently from the rest of the federal government, with dedicated funding sources and long-term commitments that are not subject to the annual budget process. This makes benefits more secure, since the amount spent each year on Social Security benefits is not limited to what Congress appropriates but is instead based on a benefit formula.9 Though Congress can rewrite the law to change this formula—as it did in 1983 in the form of a gradual increase in the normal retirement age10—it has been reluctant to cut benefits for older workers and retirees who would have the greatest difficulty adjusting to cuts.

The fact that Social Security benefits are an entitlement that workers earn through a lifetime of contributions does not make them an open-ended liability for taxpayers. To the contrary, the Social Security Administration is prohibited from borrowing, so if it does not have enough money to pay promised benefits in full, it will be forced to cut benefits. This could happen in 2037 when the trust fund is projected to run out, though it is much more likely that Congress will act to shore up the system’s finances before then.

It is important to understand that, because Social Security is prohibited from borrowing, it must balance its long-term budget. As Social Security Chief Actuary Stephen Goss succinctly put it: “Trust Funds enforce long-term budget neutrality. Total spending to date cannot exceed income to date” (Goss 2010). Social Security can run a short-run deficit only if it has previously run surpluses. Thus, when it is drawing down trust fund assets to pay for the Baby Boomer retirement, it will be contributing to the unified budget deficit, a measure that includes Social Security. But over time, Social Security cannot add to the federal deficit.
