Romney's biggest negative is that he's seen as elitist. So, if Republicans wanted to win, they'd drop elitist stuff like ending the Estate Tax and reducing Capital Gains taxes to zero. Romney's VP choice suggests he's doubling down on elitism. Are tax breaks for the rich that important?
How about alienating the Ron Paul supporters by stealing his delegates? Instead of taking a page from Ron Paul's playbook on liberty to expand the tent, the GOP is in the news for adding populist planks to their platform.
And, of course, they picked Romney as their candidate, a man who doesn't energize any of the GOP base because we all know he's really a social liberal, even if he's not militant about it.
