Dignity never dies

Thomas is arguing that depriving people of fundamental rights is okay, because they can retain their dignity?

That's fucking insane.

No... that's not at all what he said. Seriously, who taught you how to read?

Government cannot bestow nor deny dignity, Carbine. He said that in his opinion. Go read it.

I did read it. The whole thing, which I'm confident you haven't.

1. He did vote against giving gays their equal rights, so he is arguing in defense of his vote.

2. He says
"Perhaps recognizing that these cases do not actually involve liberty as it has been understood, the majority goes to great lengths to assert that its decision will advance the "dignity" of same-sex couples.
The flaw in that reasoning, of course, is that the Constitution contains no "dignity" Clause, and even if it did, the government would be incapable of bestowing dignity."

He's making a fallacious argument that if he can prove that denying someone something claimed as a right doesn't necessarily harm their dignity,

then it must not be a right.

Comically he uses slavery as an example, perhaps forgetting that slavery was abolished.

We must understand......if gay people feel as though they have lost their dignity as a result of being made second class citizens......not worthy of equal protection and rights.....that's on them. They shouldn't be so sensitive. They are such pansies!

Clarence Thomas voted for upholding the Defense of Marriage Act, wherein the federal government was barred from recognizing same sex marriages - and thus denying federal benefits related to marriage - despite those marriages being legal in various states under state law,

so clearly he is voting his personal opposition to same sex marriage, not his alleged principles regarding states rights and marriage.

Dignity never dies, history proves it. Sometimes, dignity is all you have. The only way people lose their dignity is if they surrender it willingly.

Dignity and an empty sack is worth the empty sack. - Rule of Acquisition 109

Takei is right and Thomas is wrong. Government can take away your dignity, and its willingness to do so is exactly what separates freedom from totalitarianism.
