My father and most of my uncles served in WW2. My dd214 states Honorable. None of them ever had their medals on the wall. In fact, we only found out what they had after they died and we went through their stuff. They didn't like war, and wanted to leave it as far behind as possible. They served, were proud of their service, but were not braggarts.

Wars are fairly easy for America to win these days because we excel at displays of power, winning the peace is another matter. The more death we cause in winning a war the harder it is to set up a functioning government afterward. The ultimate aim is not just kill people, it is to show that a westernized society is better than a bronze age theocracy. We do that by not being monsters.

By comparison though we haven't had to go back to war with Germany, Japan, Italy, or do little bomb drop operations every few years. We 'won' the war decisively. Unlike the Gulf War we at best 'resolved for a little bit.'
