In all seriousness, the fatal flaw is in our style of democracy - namely, winner-take-all, plurality voting (ie lesser-of-two-evils).

Combine that with an electorate eager to be bamboozled and we have the mess we're in now.

Politicians would be monitored by the media and their lies would be exposed. The problem comes when the media becomes the propaganda arm of a political party and the lies are ignored, covered up or portrayed as the truth.
