60% of Protestant marriages end in divorce. That stat's always had me thinking marriage, if monogamous, isn't natural. Especially in a consumer society where little if anything is bought for the long-term. Cars are leased, computers are upgraded every few years (except mine which is now 16 years old with probably 18 year-old technology,) houses are flipped or people just move peridocially instead of having a multigenerational homestead, jobs come and go.

It's like the line from "Brave New World" of "New things are better than old things. I want all new things." And this desire includes relationships. When one gets dull or encounters hardships, instead of trying to patch it, you discard it for a new one.

The problem isn't tied to ethnicity or sexuality, but culture. Our culture is a consumer-capitalist one where no one patches things any more when it's acceptable by the rest of society to simply discard things and people alike.

If you ask most adults what is the one things they wish their parents had given them when they were kids. . . most would answer, more of their TIME.

My wife and I have taken steps so that she could be part time. Such steps have included buying used cars, turning off cable, staying in our starter home for a very long time (until recently) turning down higher paying jobs to stay close to support net.

And we have taken some flak about it from our peers. We are weird.

But my wife has loved being part time over that last couple of years. She has been home with our child a lot.

Before that, i was part time for a while. I was home. I loved it.

Some of my wive's female co-workers sometimes voice jealousy about her being part time. They would love to stay at home with their children more.

But they keep buying stuff, new cars, bigger houses, vacations.

When the boys came home and wanted their jobs backs, the women had gotten a taste of holding a "real" job and handling money and being independent.

Nothing has been the same since.

As women gained their financial and emotional independence, all hell broke loose.

Then you throw in the invention of the birth control pill in the 60s and now woman can play the field the way men have been for millennia.

This led to a huge shift in the imbalance of power in marriages. It kind of ticks off some guys when their wife wants to be treated as an equal partner in the relationship.
