Silicon valley sort if got up into Fremont in the 880 corridor. There were plenty of jobs around IAK iver decades. But OAK residents needed to clean up and commute like all the rest of the Bay area.

Silicon Valley isn't even on the same side of the bay as Oakland.

Yeah, they do have a fair rail system that reaches all the way to Stockton in the central valley with the ACE train to San Jose. You can make connections in Pleasanton for the N. bay and SF on BART.

San Francisco used to be a delightful place where of course, as in any big city, you take normal precautions, but you really didn't worry or even think about being mugged or robbed there. It isn't that way any more. Yet the official line is that crime is only up a bit here and there , down here and there and is relatively safe compared to other California cities. I wasn't feeling it.

And Oakland just 12 miles away across the bay is touted as the most crime ridden large city in California. And opinions, most of which have little or no merit, are all over the map as to why.

Of course the 'woke' California Supreme Court mandated cashless bail after a substantial majority of Californians opposed that. That and Oakland's big push to defund the police are no doubt large factors in surging crime.

Oakland thugs seem to stay home for the most part, though. Berkeley is only a hop and a skip down Telegraph from Oakland and it remains relatively safe. San Leandro OTOH, not so much and just a close.
