BEIJING: Chinese police shot dead 8 people on Monday in the border area of Kashgar trying to combat what the government described as a 'terrorist attack'. The attack happened in Yarkand county close to the old Silk Road in Xinjiang's south, the regional government said in a statement on its news website.

"The police took decisive measures, shooting dead eight and capturing one," the website statement said.

The statement said the police opened fire after nine thugs attacked a police station in Kashgar. The thugs threw explosive devices and set police cars on fire. The incident comes on the heels of another police action killing 14 people near Kashgar in mid-December. Two police officials were killed in the clash with a "violent terror gang", which was armed with explosives, axes and knifes.

In both cases, the government has described the attackers as terrorists but did not specifically link them to the ongoing East Turkmenistan Islamic movement, which seeks to create a separate nation out of Xinjiang.

"Religious-political factors, especially the issue of religious politicization in Xinjiang, have had a negative impact on China's political integration," the state-run Xinjiang Daily said in an editorial.

The paper justified the government's strong arm methods saying, "In the name of religion, 'East Turkistan' separatists are desperate to split the motherland, which is a serious political issue that demands proper and timely response from the government".

But government officials did not specifically blame the East Turkistan movement for Monday's violence and the one that took place in mid-December.

"This case shows once again the anti-human and anti-social nature of terrorist groups," Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

Personally, I revile all forms of extremism, but East Turkestan was NEVER part of China proper to begin with. Any claim upon such territory is very tenuous and dubious at best.

Xinjiang is in no mood to put up with Chinese regime's oppressive tactics. There was another unrest in which Chinese authorities killed 12 Uighur muslims.

BEIJING: Six people died in explosions and another six were shot dead by police in China's Xinjiang, authorities said on Saturday, in the latest wave of violence to hit the restive region.

The violence in Xinhe in Aksu prefecture in China's far west appears to be linked to triple explosions that rocked the same area on Friday evening, which authorities said resulted in three deaths.

It is unclear if the three deaths reported Friday are included in the latest tally of 12 fatalities.

"As police were dealing with violent incidents a mob threw explosives," with six people killed by police, five arrested and another six killed as they "committed the offence", the Tianshan news portal, which is run by the local government, said Saturday.

Xinhe is an area located at China's extreme west, on its border with Kyrgyzstan and populated predominantly by members of the country's Uighur minority.

Tianshan reported late Friday that triple explosions killed three people and wounded two others in the same area of the largely Muslim region.

One person was killed after two blasts in a hairdressing salon and market, while two others died inside a car which "self exploded" when surrounded by police, Tianshan said.

The vast western region has for years been hit by sporadic unrest by predominantly Muslim Uighurs, which rights groups say is driven by cultural oppression, intrusive security measures and immigration by Han Chinese.

In recent months it has seen more regular violent incidents, usually involving men armed with knives and explosives, according to official media.

Beijing attributes the unrest to religious extremists and separatism. The most serious recent violent incident took place in the Turpan area of Xinjiang, leaving at least 35 people dead in June.
