‘We are fed up’: More than 50 people arrested in protest that led to gridlock in Boston, group says

By Frank O'Laughlin,

Boston police officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers made dozens of arrests during a protest that shut down traffic in Dewey Square near South Station on Thursday morning.

Jewish protestors and allies rallied to “perform disruptive civil disobedience” in the area of Summer Street and Atlantic Avenue, demanding that President Biden use his power to ensure a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and end the unconditional military aid to Israel.

“As long as Biden lends support to genocide, they will say, his administration will be unable to make its message heard or pursue other governing priorities,” the group If Not Now said in a statement. “On the morning of the State of the Union address , President Biden must hear that voters will not be pacified with meager humanitarian aid, temporary “pauses” in fighting, and equivocation. We demand an end to the flow of tax dollars for genocide. We demand a lasting ceasefire now.”

Video captured by a Boston 25 News photographer showed law enforcement officers placing a number of the protesters in handcuffs and escorting them away from the area.

In a post on X shortly before 9 a.m. , officials wrote, “Boston Police have made several arrests after today’s protest. Traffic has reopened.”

The names of those who were arrested weren’t immediately available and it wasn’t clear if they’ll face charges.

After the protest was dismantled, If Not Now claimed that more than 50 of the 300 protesters who took part in the demonstration had been taken into custody.

The protesters were spotted holding large banners that said, “Biden: Lasting Ceasefire Now” and “Our Safety is Intertwined: No Money for Gaza Massacre,” among other messages.

STATEMENT OF IF NOT NOW - SF BAY AREA

On Sunday, the JCRC, Israeli Consulate, Israeli American Council, Stand with Us, Democrats for Israel, ADL, AJC, and others are planning a “Unity March” in SF billed as a march against antisemitism. As Jews, we are deeply committed to building a world where all people are free from violence and persecution. We know that we can only fight antisemitism by fighting all forms of oppression. Unfortunately, the groups leading the “Unity March” don’t see it that way — these groups have a history of weaponizing Jewish pain and fear to defend the Israeli government from accountability for its indefensible violence against the Palestinian people.

We recognize that many of us are feeling genuinely afraid right now. Since the attack on Israelis on October 7 and the ensuing assault on Palestinians in Gaza, we’ve seen an uptick in attacks on Jews, Palestinians, and Muslims. By perpetuating the conflation of Zionism with Judaism, the groups that are leading the Unity March endanger us all. We reject attempts to equate support for Israel’s horrific assault on Gaza with compassion for the Jewish community. We refuse to allow our community’s voice to be co-opted to justify genocide.

They fucked around and found out.

These idiots do not meet my definition of "Jews." Not to be stereotypical, but Jews are smarter and better informed than these idiots, in addition to being at least willing to give the IDF the benefit of any doubt.

Reminds me of people who claim to be "ex-Republicans." Usually lying.

Good on the cops....The reason that Boston is considered to be as safe as many red run cities is because Michelle Wu had not been able to neuter the Boston PD.....Yet.

In fact the PD let it be known to her through back channels that if she fucked around with them she was gonna find out.

Why we even tolerate Americans protesting in America about foreign countries is beyond me. If an American wants to protest something about a foreign country then go to that country and protest.

Protesting is a part of America yes, but it should only be tolerated when it's Americans protesting something in our own country or something we're directly involved in. like protesting us being in Vietnam, that's ok. But this idea America needs to protest what happens in other countries that have nothing to do with us is utter bullshit.

Ship them to Gaza. The treatment they would receive there might help them understand.....for an hour or so until they're murdered and dragged through the street.

It sure seems to me that creating gridlock isn't a very smart way to win friends and gain influence.
Neither is bombing hell out of civilians. That's one reason the US has been seen as the greatest purveyor of violence in the world for the last 50 years or so. Bloodthirsty Jews and Christians.

Hats off to these kids. There is some hope for the world.
