This is bewildering as in birthrates are crashing in China and ever larger cumulative fractions of the population are being made eligible for pensions at 55 age for women and 60 for men. High skill/ high wealth Chinese have been leaving the country for decades with the only problem being that their neighbors really don't like them.

The Chinese authorities do not see the above as a problem despite the attempted Chinese genocides in Malaysia and Indonesia in the last century.

So, the negotiations with the western barbarians are on hold for now . The Middle Kingdom is waiting for the barbarians to bring tribute. I don't see this as working out according to plan.

China has a larger marketplace, controls its money valuation closely, has a rising middle class, and people are used to getting by with less. Yes they probably will weather an all out trade war better than us.

China's economy is roughly 2/3 the GDP of US economy at $13.4T (2018) vs the US at $20.5T (2018).

We disagree on who can do better in a trade war. If the US and China cut the cord, the US moves factories from China. Apple shouldn't have put so much there to begin with. Amazon, Facebook, Netflix, and Google don't depend on China as much as China depends on the US market. The US needs to make China play fair or we're not doing business. Hell, even Chuck Schumer is cheering Trump on to get a good China deal.

Tariff the hell out of China, until they learn what fair trade means.

If a loaf of bread costs half as much in China as it does in the US, than 2/3's GDP buys a lot more bread. In addition, if the Chinese government provides your housing then that is even more money you have to buy pies and tarts to go with your bread. The overall cost of living in China is over 40% less than it is in the US and rent is 55+% lower Cost of Living in China.

Then again, the standard of living in China is much less. People are crammed into 150 sq/ft apartments, for example.

And the Kardashians probably have more closet space than I have Square Feet, but that really doesn't matter in this context since we and they cannot import or export square footage

Tariffs really only work to protect market dominance. For this reason China's tariffs will probably work, ours will only cost us more for goods.

China has over 1.5 billion people. Maybe more. About a few hundred million are involved in the modernization at this point. Their middle class is not the same in standard of living comparison to ours. But it is something when before it was nothing. They still need us as we consume a lot of products.

Understandable, they always got their way in the past so why not, regretfully the loss of their largest market could well translate into a financial disaster.

How in God's name can anyone determine what "China seems to believe"? The dirty little secret is that the crazy angry American left hopes that China will win the trade war and it will do it's damndest to promote the propaganda of foreign agents to try to make it happen.

China may not do well in this round, it remains to be seen, but with their belt and road program, their effort to do commerce with any willing trade partner sets them up to be the sole economic giant of the future. Meanwhile, in the US, the mindset is military domination of the globe with trade as an afterthought.
