US identifies China as security threat, seeks India partnership
Jan 5, 2012, WASHINGTON: The United States is investing in long-term strategic partnership with India, the Pentagon said on Thursday in a new defence strategic document which puts Asia on a bigger priority and identifies China as a security threat.
"The United States is investing in a long-term strategic partnership with India to support its ability to serve as a regional economic anchor and provider of security in the broader Indian Ocean region," said the document unveiled by President Barack Obama in his rare appearance at the Pentagon. The document titled 'Sustaining US Global Leadership: Priorities for 21st Century Defense' identified China as one country which poses a security threat to the US in long term. "Over the long-term, China's emergence as a regional power will have the potential to affect the US economy and our security in a variety of ways," said the eight-page document. "Our two countries have a strong stake in peace and stability in East Asia and an interest in building a cooperative bilateral relationship. However, the growth of China's military power must be accompanied by greater clarity of its strategic intentions in order to avoid causing friction in the region," the document said.

The new strategy also replaces the decade-old policy of maintaining a force capable of fighting two wars at once. "Even when US forces are committed to a large-scale operation in one region, they will be capable of denying the objectives of - or imposing unacceptable costs on - an opportunistic aggressor in a second region," it said. The document made clear that while some current military missions will be curtailed, none will be scrapped entirely. "Wholesale divestment of the capability to conduct any mission would be unwise, based on historical and projected uses of US military forces and our inability to predict the future," the document said. AP adds: President Barack Obama insists the United States will maintain what he calls the best-equipped military in US history despite deep and looming defense budget cuts.

In a rare appearance in the Pentagon briefing room, Obama offered the outlines of an overhauled defense strategy. It is designed to contend with hundreds of billions of dollars in budget cuts and refocus the United States' national security priorities after a decade dominated by the post-Sept 11 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Obama says the military will be leaner but promises the world that the US will maintain its 'military superiority" with fighting forces ready for any threat. The president says the strategy review centered on the military the country needs after the "long wars of the last decade are over."

With China in Mind, India Calls for Boost in Scientific Research
January 03, 2012 - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called on Tuesday for a doubling of spending on scientific research after bluntly stating that India is falling behind China in the world of science.
His worries were expressed as he inaugurated the 99th Indian Science Congress in Bhubaneswar, eastern Orissa state. “Over the past few decades, India’s relative position in the world of science had been declining and we have been overtaken by countries like China," Singh said. "Things are changing, but we cannot be satisfied with what has been achieved.” Indian officials say technology skills are of critical importance to a country whose economy has been powered by its scientists and engineers.

While China’s economy raced ahead on the back of its low-cost manufacturing skills, India has become an information technology hub because of the skills of its software engineers. And India nurtures ambitions of becoming a knowledge hub as it turns out 750,000 engineering and science graduates every year. But in recent years, concerns are growing that India may be losing the edge as China pours much more money into science, research and innovation in a bid to not just make products for the world, but also innovate products. Chinese students studying engineering and science in the United States outnumber their Indian peers.

Prime Minister Singh wants India to regain the initiative and has called on the country’s buoyant private sector to increase its contribution to scientific innovation. He said it is ironic that multinational companies like General Electric and Motorola have established world class research hubs in India, but few Indian companies have done the same.

India’s spending on scientific research and development has been too low and stagnant, the prime minister said. He wants it raised from less than one percent to two percent of gross domestic product. “I have often spoken about the commitment of our government to give a boost to the science and technology sector in our country," he said. "We must ensure a major increase in research and development including by industry and strategic sectors.” In recent years, Indian companies have also complained of a growing skills shortage in the country. They say the skills that engineers and other workers bring to the office are not adequate and have called for improvements in the quality of education.

The below article I found to be extremely interesting. With the Chinese presence being right at the back door of the middle east, the Chinese are in an ideal geographical position to render political stability to the less stable islamo countries. It just appears to me that Chinese influence would be superior in dealing with problems that arise in the islamo countries that are geographically east of the country of Israel. Read the article in the link below...

How China Sees Middle East | China Power

& let me know what you think.

China worries about China. They mind their own business. They're honest and smart enough to admit they only want the oil. They have no interest in meddling and controlling Middle Eastern Nations' internal affairs. I just wish we were that honest. We only want their oil. So lets buy it but stop meddling in nations' internal affairs over there. We need to dramatically scale back our presence in the Middle East. China's got it right.

Either leave them alone completely, or take them over completely. China and the US could divvy up the winnings. Don't laugh too hard. Nixon had a plan to invade Saudi Arabia.
