Vice president used ‘f-word’ in heated exchange

WASHINGTON - Vice President Cheney cursed at Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy during a confrontation on the Senate floor while members were having their annual group picture taken earlier this week, Leahy and Senate sources said Thursday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in a terse discussion between the two that touched on politics, religion and money, Senate aides with knowledge of the encounter said.

According to aides, Leahy said hello to Cheney following the taking of the Senate group photo on the floor of the chamber.

Cheney, who as vice president is president of the Senate, then ripped into Leahy for the Democratic senator’s criticism this week of alleged war profiteering in Iraq by Halliburton, the oil services company that Cheney once ran.

Leahy and other Democrats have called for congressional hearings into whether the vice president helped the firm win lucrative contracts in Iraq after the U.S.-led war that toppled Saddam Hussein.

During their exchange, Leahy noted that Republicans had accused Democrats of being anti-Catholic because they are opposed to some of President Bush’s anti-abortion judges, the aides said.

Cheney then responded, “f--- off” or “f--- you,” two aides said, both speaking on condition of anonymity.

I think we all know what kind of person has to resort to cursing because he is losing an argument. On Neil Cavuto, Cheney said they had "impuned my integrity", which is funny because the only person who harms his integrity is himself.

Now, mr. cheney, continue saying that Saddam and Bin Laden were banging each other every night while making plans to attack the U.S. and it'll be true.

Funny how the democratic supporters were completely silent when John Kerry had the F bomb plastered all over his website and official blog.

I think we all know what kind of person has to resort to cursing because he is losing an argument.

What makes you so sure he was losing an argument? Maybe they disagreed and things just got heated. I curse all the time during arguments/debates, what kind of person does that make me? I think it makes me normal.

I've been on these boards for a long time, but I've never heard you say in the middle of an argument to f*** off to someone.

In Kerry's "Rolling Stone" interview it was in the context of "they really f***ed up", which is a lot different than saying "F*** you" or "F**** off".

My point is, people curse, sometimes during heated exchanges and sometimes during explanations. Sports figures, IT personnel, policemen, rock stars, executives... Why is is so bad when a politician uses profanity? It's not like he was addressing the nation. And again, you have no idea what the 'exact' context of the discussion was, maybe Cheney was justified in his anger.

Yet another reason I no longer associate myself with the Democrats. It's hilarious that people defend a president that gets sexual favors from interns in the same office Ronald Reagan wouldn't even take off his jacket, then turn around and say dropping an F bomb is losing your last shred of decency.

Cheney says he didn't say it, the Dems say he did. Either way, if "f--- yourself" is the worst thing that guy hears in his life he's led a pretty uninteresting life.

In an article today in the WashPost, Cheney is quoted as saying he shouldn't have used the "bad" word. So, apparently he did say it.
But I don't care. I don't consider it a bad word. I agree with George Carlin that words designated as bad are just the result of religious superstition. They are just an assemblage of vowels and consonants. I try not to use profanity b/c it simplifies one's vocabulary, but I see nothing inherently wrong with any word. That's ridiculous.

Personally I long for the days of brawls on the floor of the house or senate. Todays politicians are career oriented rather than passionate defenders. Most begin a career in politics with a fifty year run in mind. Watch the BBC and enjoy as the parliment wears each other out verbally on a regular basis.

I think that is a pretty lame explanation. When I told Leahy to fuck off I was speaking for the GOP? I'm not sure I see the BIG deal in this whole thing, but if you're going top tell him to Fuck Off at least stand behind your words, and don't justify it by saying it needed to be said for the good of the party.

Telling other senators to fuck off on the floor of the senate is not something that needs to be done.
