CHICO — Police are concerned that sunny, warm weather Thursday could bring out large crowds to celebrate Cesar Chavez Day.
"After weeks of rain and cold weather, the Chico Police Department is anticipating a very busy day and weekend," officials said in a press release.
The concern is elevated by the fact that Thursday is a state holiday, and classes are canceled at Chico State University.
Butte College will be in session.
Police said the main area of activity is expected in neighborhoods south of the Chico State campus.
Extra patrol officers and officers from all Chico Police Department special enforcement teams will be on duty. In addition, volunteer members of the police mounted patrol will be utilized.
Police said they will have zero tolerance for alcohol related crimes.
A glass ban will be in effect in the downtown area starting at 8 a.m. Thursday and last until 5 a.m. Friday.
A DUI checkpoint will be in operation between 6 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday, at a location within the city limits of Chico, police said.
"The Chico Police Department is seeking community cooperation in an effort to decrease crowd control problems and alcohol violation," officials said in a statement.
"Open house parties are an invitation to trouble and often cause crowds to gather, which increases the potential for noise complaints, fights and other criminal issues," the statement continued.
Police are advising that smaller, private gatherings not open to walk-in guests are a safer alternative.
Cesar Chavez Day was established as a state holiday by the California legislature in 2000, to honor the late farm labor and civil rights leader.
