California or Texas?

Believe it or not I was born and raised in Gaithersburg and Tacoma Park, MD. I come from a family of farmers from Garrett County, so being a country boy was in the blood, but my Dad got his PhD from UM and moved to the big bad city. So I know all about MD.

I never go more than 4 miles into that state to visit kin in Friendsville.

I grew up in Prince George's county and lived for a year in Silver Spring while in law school.

I went high school (partly) in Missouri. Little town called Lexington.

I like San Antonio, but West Texas is a better fit for me. Maybe Lubbock or Odessa.

I drove from Georgia to Monterey, Cali once. I stayed the night in Odessa. From that experience I've always described it as the most God-forsaken town on Earth. I'm sure it's an exaggeration, but you can keep the tumbleweeds and the oil rigs with the bleak brown landscape {shiver}.

can't stereotype them

A conservative redneck would be totally comfortable in red neck bakersfield or red bluff. There are some real red neck cow poke towns throughout california.

A hippie californian might be comfortable in liberal Austin.

Most people would choose to live in the liberal areas. That's where its more expensive, and the property generally costs more. The magic of the free market, as it were. People vote with their dollars. And liberal areas are more popular to live in.

I can only speak from personal experience but I've spent a lot of time all over CA over the years and I have never felt comfortable there. I stopped going there completely 3 years ago.

Conversely, Texas feels like home.

The U.S. Representitive for my district Ike Skelton is from Lexington. That little town is famous down here.

Heck, that's the part I like most about it. :D

So is it your contention that California is not a blue state or that Texas is not a red state?

These are the two that, for me at least, spring to mind first.

Massachusetts is the only state I can think of that is more liberal than California.

I didn't use it because it would be tough to find a red state to compare it to.

Edit: What two states do you think would be a better comparison?

Vermont and Conneticut are much more Liberal than Massachusetts. Remember, thats where Romney is from. Vermont is almost Socialist

Rep to you too JS, sorry about the no 'neither' option.

I'm with you, I would be hard pressed to leave Missouri, but Texas runs an extremely close second and Oklahoma third.
I wouldn't want to really leave Washington either. I bitch about where I live but we have five ski resorts within two hours, we have four seasons, lakes, and a large meth industry! lol
Plus as a liberal, I have many to be liberal with here in Washington even though my part of the state is alittle more conservative. And we even have moose here!

I live in Nevada now and cant wait to leave this place. I will sell my house when I leave.

I own one house and part own a condo in a beach town in Cali. I will go live in Cali when I leave Vegas.

There is no place like Cali and Texas would be close to the last place I would live.

You really can't go by that, because the Republicans have had a Californian on the ticket seven times since Nixon first arrived, and a Texan six times.

California has red pockets, and Texas has blue ones. So you can't generalize.

PS -- Obama did extremely well among young voters in Texas, although he didn't even campaign there. Obama could take Texas next time. That would make the GOP leaders poop themselves.

I find it ironic the colors this poll is in.

Besides, California hasn't been Liberal for very long.

California Presidential Election Voting History

In fact, in the last ten election it has been split 5 for Republicans and 5 for Democrats with each having a streak of 5.

Texas Presidential Election Voting History

Texas on the other hand didn't even vote Republican for the first time until 1928 and then again not until 1952/1956.

Then it has voted Republican since 1980.

So who knows what might be Democrat or Republican another 20-30 years down the road.

Northern California, definitely north of SLO and preferably in the redwoods country because it's just really nice up there.

It is beautiful.

I lived in Cali most of my life. There are so many little towns (inclucing beach towns) in So Cal that most have no idea exsist. There is tons of places in So cal that are just gorgeous.

For all who think its too expensive, you get what you pay for.

Yeah waking up every morning to the moist salty air of the beach and walking the sand and looking at the ocean before the daylight is just horrible.

Petty name calling?

If you think they are the same you are sorely mistaken.

FL is packed with humidity that SoCal does not have.

There I fixed my typo for you.
