California Chrome, a California-bred, bargain basement racehorse who won this year's Santa Anita Derby, beat a VERY strong field of competitors in the 140th running of the KENTUCKY DERBY.

California Chrome, who counts Secretariat in his pedigree, pulled away in the stretch and won in a "pedestrian" 2:03.66, on a good track.

I like this horse a lot. He was my pre-race pick, and his "rags to riches" story is a breath of fresh air, in a horse-racing world full of multi-million dollar syndicates, multi-million dollar yearling sales, and horses that are lightly raced and then retired to stud because "that's where the money is".

I like California Chrome in the next leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness, but Chrome's toughest test is the final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont, which is the longest race of the three.

There has not been a horse racing Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978, and this 36 year drought is the longest in Triple Crown history.

This may be the year. GO CALIFORNIA CHROME!
