President Lee Myung-bak is sending a letter of gratitude to each of the 21 countries around the world, which dispatched troops or offered medical support for South Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War, a presidential spokeswoman said Monday.

A National Assembly committee, meanwhile, adopted a resolution expressing thanks to those countries and their war veterans.

"The presidential message, which will be published by major newspapers of the 21 countries, is an expression of Korea's gratitude for their sacrifice during the war and its commitment to strive for peace and common prosperity," said Kim Eun-hye.

"On numerous occasions, President Lee thanked the countries for helping us as part of U.N. troops and pledged not to forget about their sacrifice."

The letter is part of the country's efforts to mark the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War on June 25.

The President also called for stronger regional cooperation to promote peace and stability, according to the spokeswoman.

A total of 16 countries, including the United States, dispatched combat troops and five countries, including Denmark, provided medical assistance to South Korea during the war.
