Missouri just over road a veto by the Governor on the law that will allow citizens to carry guns without permits....called Constitutional Carry......this makes sense since criminals still can't buy, own or carry guns and when caught doing any of those things, they can be arrested. But...to help bring comfort to the anti gun side of the debate...who worry about law abiding citizens carrying guns......even though the statistics show this is not a problem.....here is my proposal...

--to help make sure gun owners own and carry guns safely, let local fire departments or police departments teach basic gun safety in our schools....to consist of the NRA safety points for kids....

They teach children that if they find a gun they should follow 4 steps....

1. Stop.
2. Don't touch.
3. Leave the room/area
4. Find an adult

Simple and effective....

Teaching it in school meets the needs of both sides of the debate...

pro rights....

--fees for gun safety are not an issue.....it is taught to all kids without charge...thereby avoiding the Poll Tax issue when fees are charged to exercise a right

Anti gun ...

Children are taught safety around guns that they will take with them as they grow up...reducing gun accidents and reducing injuries and deaths among all ages...

The 4 steps could be done for K-5 grades.....and for Junior high or middle school...you could add encouraging them to seek proper instruction before using guns.....again..no fee, and. Pro training message is sent, which will also help to reduce gun accidents....

A win-win for all concerned.......

right?

Why not? They teach sex in school? Why not teach our culture and heritage? It's a common sense approach.

With any amount of luck, it will also increase folks awareness and increase gun sales once they are of age too.

I forgot to add this...at the middle school level, where the kids are older...you can add the rules of gun safety.....

1. All guns are always loaded.

2. Keep your finger off the trigger.......

3. Never point the open end of the gun at another human being, animal, or wall of a home......

These are abbreviated and slightly from the actual rules...of which there are 4..... But they can go a long way to avoiding gun accidents with older children...

In other words, if mom or dad is stupid enough to leave their gun laying around, let's make the kid responsible not shooting someone with it. Brilliant.

Heaven fucking forbid the gun owner be educated about guns. It's an adults constitutional right to be stupid with their guns. (But not a kid? They have to be trained.) Right? That's what you are so proud of? Untrained gun owners. Hell yea.

No....you obviously don't understand.......when the children grow up....they will know how to handle guns safely...at the same time...if they do have a parent who is irresponsible, then they will know not to touch the gun....please try to keep up.

Please engage think before you post...we are trying to have a real conversation here...

I also forgot to add one more for the middle school kids....

4. Do not touch any gun without the permission and supervision of an adult....

There...that should help make everyone a lot safer around guns...and as these children grow up, they will already know how to be safe around guns without any unConstitutional fines, fees, or taxes...

So.....to tell you the truth...I think these 4 that I just listed really should be the 4 rules of gun safety for children vs. the 4 rules of safety for an adult......any thoughts?

1. All guns are always loaded.

2. Keep your finger off the trigger.......

3. Never point the open end of the gun at another human being, animal, or wall of a home......

4. Do not touch any gun without the permission and supervision of an adult....

Let's see. Fire or police departments are government.
But you don't want the government involved in gun rights.
What if the cops or firefighters don't want kids to have any access to guns. What you gonna do then? Fire the police.

If government is good enough to train kids who can't buy a.gun, why isn't government good enough to train adults?

I can hear it now. Police are doing their gun training and little Jimmy says his daddy always leaves a gun laying around.

The police, being charged now with training little future gun owners jots down the name and address of little Jimmy to tell his stupid dad to secure his guns.

Or do you think the cops are just going to rely on a 10 yo to keep himself safe. When the cops now know there are unsecured guns in the kids house.

Which you think is more important to a cop; a kids safety. Or a stupid parents gun "rights"?

They can...as long as they aren't charging anything to do it.......that would be a Poll Tax on a Right......

You lefties don't understand a conservative view of government...no government is Anarchism or the mythical communism.....limited government is conservatism...there is a roll for Constitutionally constrained government....if the Fire dept. is going to teach fire safety, they can also teach gun safety...doesn't take much time and can be part of their over all safety program.....

Good.....you are now learning....that is why the fire department should do it. The police department could call the parent's and let them know they should secure their guns or some other method.......that is part of the reason I started this discussion....to hash out some of these details.....

This issues illustrates a philosophical divide between individual and group think. Gun advocates don't care whether others have/carry guns or not. Gun opponents want to prevent others from having guns (although often exempting themselves from this proscription).

On a practical level, any federal restrictions on gun ownership would necessarily create a national database of gun owners which could be used for nefarious purposes in the future. Just ask Eric Snowden.

You have fire departments lining up to provide firearms safety training to young school kids? Prove that.

And you really believe one visit from a fireman 3 months ago at school will keep a 9 yo from getting dad or moms gun?

Or do you and the NRA propose weekly visits from firemen?

Y o u have never raised a kid have you?

You could include gun safety education to go along with the yearly stop, drop and roll training they do for fires.......you understand that we have that training yearly for kids in all schools...right? You do understand that? And it is something that can make a diffference...and actual difference.....children who know what to do around a gun are more likely to do the right thing around a gun......

Don't worry too much about Wilbur. He seems to just be scared that some "right wing nutjob" actually has a good idea, and that it would work better than the failed left-wing attempts at gun grabbing.

Everyone here needs a hunter safety course in order to get their hunting license the first time. Everyone buying a gun for the first time should be required to take a gun safety course. Gun safety for kids is fine. They did it with us about blasting caps, and about getting into cars with strangers. We remembered.

Sorry....hunting isn't a right....so you support a Poll Tax on voting then? And a literacy test for voting...? How about a mandatory test on American history before you can vote?

That is the difference. A mandatory course would then be used to keep the poor and others from exercising a right......any fee, tax or test on a Right is unConstitutional.....my plan avoids all of those issues.

We need to take a test, which costs money, to drive a car. Because cars can be deadly weapons when used improperly. No different with guns. And I'm not sure there is a test at the end of these safety courses. Probably everyone who attends "passes." It raises awareness, which is enough. Although they aren't required, gun safety classes are regularly run around here and the gun dealers encourage them (sometimes teach them). There is nothing wrong with it, 2AGuy.

If you're too poor to pay a fee or tax, you're probably too poor to buy a gun.
