The expatriates I met were corporate scientists (mainly petroleum, geology, and mining), missionaries, diplomats...and ONE Western academic, some fool communist from the University of Maine.

All of these people I'd call conservative, and very pragmatic. Many of them were missionary doctors. See who the Peace Corps is recruiting these days? They want retired corporate big wigs. People who get big things done. You don't know any of this because you've probably never been further than 17 miles from your own font door, and you've probably never cared about anyone but yourself.

Wait a minute. I met another commie over there. I probably should have shot him, but he did have a big altruistic streak in his nature and he really did care about people. It's probably the only thing that saved him from being hung.
