But I seem to recall during the early Bush years people like Rush defending Bush's extreme spending by saying that the US debt was not that concerning, and going so far as to suggest that the US had some kind of moral obligation to maintain its debt because it is what kept the rest of the world's economy afloat.

It is not up to government to create jobs. The government's responsibility is to create policy where the private sector can be successful, expand and THAT is what creates jobs.
Not a stimulus loaded with fake money. Government should not be pumping fake money into cities, counties and states to prop up public sector jobs.
Now we all know that's where the majority of the stimulus money went. The money has run out and those few people who's jobs were temporarily saved are now looking for work.
Had the federal government decided to pump money into small business, if that happened, I can guarantee there would be a lot less people unemployed. Plus much of those jobs would have resulted in other new jobs being created because growth would be from the private sector which by the way would increase revenues to state and federal governments.
The private sector makes this nation great. Not government.
