Pass a billboard while driving in the next few months, and there is a good chance the company that owns it will know you were there and what you did afterward. Clear Channel Outdoor Americas, which has tens of thousands of billboards across the United States, will announce on Monday that it has partnered with several companies, including AT&T, to track people’s travel patterns and behaviors through their mobile phones.

By aggregating the trove of data from these companies, Clear Channel Outdoor hopes to provide advertisers with detailed information about the people who pass its billboards to help them plan more effective, targeted campaigns. With the data and analytics, Clear Channel Outdoor could determine the average age and gender of the people who are seeing a particular billboard in, say, Boston at a certain time and whether they subsequently visit a store.

Wow, you are just now finding out that they do this?

If you have a smart phone, and you are ever out and about, they know where you go. Always.

I posted this shit years ago, it got put into the "conspiracy" sub-forum. Better put it there now. lol

Oh no, wait, it's now from the establishment press, so that must mean folks are ready to accept it. . . .

What do you propose be done about it – make such billboards illegal, boycott the companies advertising, get rid of your smart phone; this is the nature of free market capitalism in the 21st Century, stop whining and get used to it.

This is how capitalism is supposed to work.

Don't buy smart phones. Don't buy apps.

Buy a pay as you go phone that is anonymous.

I'm not sure what can be done, but quietly accepting the Orwellian dick being rammed down your throat certainly isn't the best option.
In other words continue to whine about it.

And the reference to Orwell fails – 'Orwellian' refers to government efforts to violate privacy rights and increase the size and authority of the state at the expense of individual liberty, not private entities and corporations; this has nothing to do with government, no rights are being 'violated' or 'lost.'
