Taiwan was first settled by Chinese laborers brought in by the Dutch in the 16th Century. In the 17th Century, it was settled by Chinese refugees from the Ming Dynasty, before being officially annexed by the Qing Dynasty in 1683. It remained part of the Qing Empire until 1895, when it was ceded to Japan as part of the first Sino-Japanese War. It was returned to China in 1945 as part of the WWII settlement.

We are not stopping the growing military might of an ascending power. The last transfer to top dog was between the United Kingdom and the United States in which the U.S. was flexing its muscle around the beginning of the 20th century. There were 2 world wars from the time we became the economic power and were slow to build our military which left a declining economic and military England struggle in the world as its assets decreased and it became poorer. And both nations were English speaking and friendlier to each other. China has little relationship with the United States and has a few bones to pick with us also.
