"Metal" generally means sucky songwriting and with double kick overkill. ROCK? Everything is rock.

Here is a cool obscurity though.

Full album: "Orchid" by Opeth

This reminds me of exploring the desert... especially the deserts of Arizona, Nevada, and Cali... like the Superstition Mountains, Red Rock, along the Colorado River, Death Valley...

The desert is so beautiful whether day or night...

I guess I am old school. I have not heard a NEW REALLY GOOD rock band or pop band or metal band since maybe the early 90s.
My favorite bands are also old school, and many of them are still touring, because they still pack the venues.

Journey (my all-time favorite........no matter who the lead singer is)
REO Speedwagon
Chicago
Styx
Elton John
Foreigner
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Judas Priest
Queensryche
Motley Crue
Aerosmith
Many, many more from the 70s and 80s

I guess I'm kind of mainstream when it comes to metal, but I really enjoy Metallica and I like Damage Inc. The beginning is cool, and then it's kind of like speed metal. Sometimes I like that stuff.

Metallica before the black album was great.

I love Opeth. Although they've gotten away from the metal side of their music of late, they did a great job mixing styles.

The most recent band I've been impressed with is Solipsist.

As ChrisL said, there have been too many good bands over the years to make a list.

I love the 70s and 80s era. Queensryche and Motley Crue are awesome.

Scorpions
The Police
Pink Floyd
Metallica
AC/DC
Led Zeppelin
CCR
Alice N' Chains.

I'm missing a bunch in no certain order here but there will never be any Lynard White Trash Skynard on my list, nor any Queen, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Rush, or Boston!

He's the King of "Bach n' Roll" and I was lucky enough to see him at Nakano Sun Plaza in Japan in 1997.
