Best and Worst States for Taxes

I don't know where they got those numbers... because here in Reno, Nevada, we pay 7.825% sales tax, not the 6.5% they have listed.

7.825% might be your total sales tax - state and local.

Andyou're lucky. I pay 8.8% sales tax.

I live in a fairly low-tax state, Republicans try to take credit for that, but it was the late, great Gov. Mel Carnahan and a Democratic state legislature that reduced the retail sales tax from approx. 7% to 4.225%.

i didn't need that map to tell me that we are raped for taxes in this state, then they beg for more, saying what we already give is not enough.
example:
when you get a new driver's license or renew it, it takes 10-12 biz days to get your new card. in the mean time, you have the little yellow slip to carry around, and no merchant is willing to take that as ID, and your old ID won't do either...

In south dakota, they have the technology to produce your new card on the spot. Takes maybe 5 minutes...

another example:
about 49% of this state's budget is alotted for public education. they then bitch that we have a budget crisis, as the superintenents get big fat raises.

And, of course, New York is the State of Taxes, the first in the nation.... that's a dubious honor....

ours are about the same price...told you we get raped in this state...

oh, and my county property taxes just took a hike of an 18% increase. I kinda suspected an increase because of some improvements that we made, but damn... even our city mayor is pissed about this. He wants the county to re-evaluate the tax increase process.

oh, and with the education budget...the liberals are lobbying for MORE money to be allocated for the schools...where the hell do they think this money will come from?? Our collective asses??

Ventura started this with his tax rebates a few years ago, and lowered other taxes, while he implemented the property tax increase. Bastard.

Sure glad that I'm retired and the houses are gone...but will pass on this info to my kids...that sucks big time!

Now we know why Minnesota, located in a sea of "Red States", always falls into the "Blue State" column at election time. My sincere condolences, FuzzyKitten. Ever think of relocating to the Sun Belt, say maybe southern Alabama?

we're moving towards the red...right now i would say we are purple, more with a blue-er tinge than red...our governor is red, and we have norm coleman for senator...

as far as moving, if I wasn't married to Tim and did not buy my grandparent's house (i have a sentimental attachment to it and we are never moving unless forced to by law), i would happily move elsewhere. Definitely somewhere warmer...

Interesting article with chart available so you can compare your state to the other 49.

I would have guessed that NH had a higer tax burden for local taxes. As the liberals moved out of Taxachussetts to the north,, they brought with them the feeling that all public schools needed to have money thrown at them,, and the belief that social services just weren't funded unless at a socialist rate.
