Belgium : Police raid Jihadists

Three people have been killed during a terrorism-related police operation against suspected jihadists in Belgium, a federal prosecutor said.

Local residents in Verviers, in the east of the country, heard a fusillade of machine gun shots and explosions.

Reports indicate that the gunfight followed a foiled jihadist attack on a local police station.

“A second Paris has been avoided,” a ministry of justice source told Nieuwsblad newspaper.

A local resident said: "I heard two explosions and saw two young men run away. They were between 25 and 30 years of Arab origin."

They got a lot more to go. There's millions of such animals residing in each of these European nations. Let the games begin. Europeans don't play nicey nicey like Americans do. Their violent history is proof of it. Once they get pissed off all bets are off.

After every incident like this, we should have a roll call to see if all the regulars check in.

Belgium Has Become Europe's jihadist hothouse...

Paris attack: Why Belgium is at the heart of a destructive wave of terror in Europe
Nov 17, 2015 - As a modest, if prosperous nation of just 11 million, Belgium rarely makes news headlines, yet today it has the unenviable distinction of being Europe's jihadist hothouse.
After the Paris attacks, police quickly traced the terrorists to Brussels, raiding addresses in the Molenbeek district and arresting seven suspects. It was in the grimy, run-down, neighbourhood that investigators believe the Paris plot was hatched by Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the Belgian-born son of an immigrant shopkeeper from Morocco. Abaaoud is only part of a web of Belgium-based foot soldiers, whose exploits have left a trail of death across Europe. And beyond: around 500 young Belgians have gone to Syria to fight for jihadist groups like ISIS — per capita, no other European country has sent more foreign fighters.

Why is Belgium at the heart of Europe's most destructive wave of terrorism in a generation? There is no single explanation, but rather a number of ingredients, from post-war immigration from north Africa, hate preachers, ghettos, poverty, and marginalision. There is also a belated realization by the Belgian authorities that complacency towards extremism has allowed the pernicious Islamic influences to fester. Islamist extremism has a long history in Belgium. While there have been few attacks on Belgian soil, there has been significant involvement in atrocities elsewhere. There are links to the murder of the Afghan anti-Taliban fighter Ahmed Shah Masoud — just before the September 2001 attacks in the US — and the Groupe Islamique Marocain Combattant (GICM), which had a major role in the 2004 Madrid train bombings. In 2005, Muslim convert Muriel Degauque, became the first known female Western suicide bomber, when she blew herself up in Iraq.

Some of the problems are thought to have deeper roots, including a 1970s decision to allow Saudi Arabia to send preachers with fundamentalist, Salafist teachings to Moroccan immigrants. The Great Mosque of Brussels is still owned by the Saudi royal family. However, it was the Syrian civil war that gave the jihadists their recent fillip. Belgium's chief police commissioner Catherine de Bolle says that of 474 Belgians linked with the Syria conflict, about 130 have returned, 77 have died in the conflict, and more than 200 are still over there. Intelligence officials say that Syria — in particular, the ultra-violent ideology of ISIS — represents a paradigm shift from seeking a regional caliphate to global Jihad. The Belgian connection was laid bare in the recent trial in Antwerp of Fouad Belkacem, the leader of the radical group Sharia4Belgium, which claimed to be an Islamic information network, but was actively recruiting fighters for Syria. Belkacem, a 32-year-old Islamic radical, was accused by prosecutors of belonging to a terrorist group and brainwashing young people. In February, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. It was the largest trial of its kind in the country: 44 other members of Sharia4Belgium were given sentences ranging between three and 12 years, although most of them in absentia, as they were in Syria.

Paris attacks highlight encryption concerns: US
Nov 18, 2015 | WASHINGTON: US lawmakers said on Tuesday it was likely that new, difficult to break "end-to-end" encryption technologies were used by individuals in Belgium, France and Syria involved in the Paris attacks last week. "We can't tell you today specifically that they were using a specific encrypted platform. We think that's a likely communication tool because we didn't pick up any direct communication (before the attacks)," said Republican Senator Richard Burr, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Hawkish lawmakers like Burr, and a number of intelligence officials, seized on the Paris attacks this weekend to argue that they illustrate the dangers of increasing encryption. "I think it's safe to say that there are 30 end-to-end encrypted software packages that you can download for free. And, given the fact that between iTunes and PlayStation, the number of apps that are added on a weekly and monthly, yearly basis, and I think we anticipate that everything from this point forward will have an encrypted communications to it," he said. "Now's the time for us to act," Burr said.

He said the committee was far from developing legislation to address the issue, and that it was trying determine the options that are available and then would decide the best course, short, medium and long-term. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, said he would not be surprised if it were ultimately shown that encrypted communications had been used by the perpetrators of the Paris attacks. "We know that ISIS instructs their operatives to move from social media, once they're recruited people, to those applications where they can encrypt," Schiff said on cable network CNN.

Intelligence agencies have long warned that the rise of encrypted email, chat and phone platforms has made it more difficult to track suspicious activity. Senior Obama administration officials have pushed to allow for so-called "backdoors" that would give intelligence agents a way to access encrypted communications. Privacy advocates, technology companies and security researchers generally oppose such vulnerabilities, warning that any weakness built in for law enforcement could also expose information to foreign nation states and malicious hackers.

Excellent. Perhaps things will get so bad for Muslims in Europe that many will consider converting to Christianity and maybe the women will stop wearing those silly veils. For the life of me I don't understand why Muslim women insist on identifying themselves so obviously as Muslims. The parent's (or grandparents) of these idiots immigrated to country on another continent for economic or political reasons and now their kids are turning against the existing native culture and are not interested in integrating.
