They kept them in a locked arms vault when I wasn't training with them. We were only issued live Ammo when we were on a range, and every round had to be accounted for. .

That's arguable... The fact that militias were so poorly trained during the Civil War (The NRA was started by a Union General who was horrified by poor marksmanship skills) is a large reason why we developed a more professional army and reserves.
