Ayn Rands SS checks

A thoroughly vile woman.

I like Atlas Shrugged though.

Of course I was 14 at the time so naturally her infantile approach to society appealed to me back then.

I read "Atlas Shrugged" on a bet...Rand's dreary purple prose took an extremely interesting plot premise and strangled it in excessively florid and irrelevant verbosity....Ditto "The Fountainhead".

Give me the short stories and nonfiction any day of the week.

I read Atlas Shrugged in high school during the summer. After my job, I'd race home and read 100 pages. I have never done that with any book before.

I grew up in a Union household in the People's Republic of Minnesota. Reading Atlas Shrugged was a revelation for me. All of the attributes that my parents had taught me were good and should be embraced are what Rand built in to her heroes.

The logic was tight even if the prose were somewhat labored.

It is one of a couple books that redefined my self image and my world view.

saying rand's prose was somewhat labored is like saying mt everest is kind of tall.

So she should just have let the government keep what they took from her without her permission for so long.

Would John Galt have given into the system in order to gain back some of the money he felt was stolen from him by the government without his permission? Before you answer, do take care to remember that Galt was essentially a outlet for Rand's Objectivist theories.

I personally have no problem with her getting the benefits she paid into the system for. However, the Ayn Rand of twenty years prior would of. Remember, in her own words, "There is no justification ever for choosing for any part of what you know to be evil."

That's her standard, not mine.
John Galt is a character. Ayn Rand didn't want to go to prison for not paying taxes.

John Galt is a romantic ideal (cf. her descriptions of art in The Romantic Manifesto).

Atlas Shrugged is a novel with highly idealized characters. Reality, is not so favorable for behaving in a 100% idealized mode. That doesn't make the ideas represented in art any less valid.

She was a Human Being, like the rest of us. Stop kicking the Messenger. An Athist that believed in Unalienable Right, Conscience, and the Establishment of Justice. OMG, she collected SS like Everybody else, hold the Presses!!!!!  ;) She's dead and gone.

Wrong. This would be akin to an Anti-Gay Preacher being caught with a male escort or Richard Dawkins getting last rites on his death bed. She wanted to hold others to standards she did not hold herself, that is the definition of a hypocrite.

If your problem with this thread is the fact it's a dead person, tough luck. Dead people on both sides of the aisle are routinely criticized on USMB.

Personally, I could care less about Rand, she was a hack writer and a person who receives far more praise then she deserves for those books. Though you can feel free to write a 70 page monologue of your own telling me why I'm wrong.

Bullshit. If returning a social security check would in any way increase the chances that social security would cease to function, I would say it's hypocritical to take the check.

But it won't, and she paid into it; why wouldn't she take the check?

More silliness from the leftards.

The silly leftards who think Rand was a hypocrite for receiving the benefits for which she paid taxes should now renounce using all products that are the result of capitalist processes. Let them begin by giving up their computers.

Indeed. Yet Rand is supposed to live up to her character's ideals? Ludicrous.

I don't think she was a hypocrite for taking her SSI.

AFter all, it was her money to take.

I think she's wrong about society and how it ought to be structured, of course.

What she is really advocating is a feudal society except on based around mercantilism, rather than the landed gentry.

A deep thinker she's not.

That's different. Somehow. It just is. No fair holding leftists to the standards they insist on imposing upon others!

I wonder how many of them drive cars powered by gasoline produced by EVUL OIL COMPANIES and use medicines made by EVUL PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES.

Since Ayn Rand extolled the virtues of selfishness, I really don't see how her cashing social security checks constitutes hypocrisy, so I'm not going to criticize her for that. However, I always have and always will criticize her for writing shitty, glorified romance novels masquerading as profound political philosophy.

But still, awesome fucking thread

Even Rand who made lots of money in her life time could not provide for her own retirement without SS and medicare.

Im glad she recieved these benifits of being an American.

I dont like to see old people starving and sick in the streets even if I dont agree with their politics and find them boring writers who are full of silly ideas.

Without this help she would have been impoverished.

Im glad she was not along with the millions of other Americans who would have been starving and sick old people without this program.

Of course, it's very important to spread a meme to smear Ayn Rand now that Atlas Shrugged is being proven to be quite prescient. The deficit this year is going to be bigger than last year - and the only way to get spending under control is to significantly reform SS and Medicare. File the attacks on Rand under "circling the Socialist Wagons to protect Big Government".

What's missing from the libtards Talking Points is how much in income, SS, and Medicare taxes she paid throughout her life time.

It was her money wasnt it?
Where did you get the notion she was impoverished?

Yep...it would have been heartless to let the silly bitch die in the streets like a dog. Even though she was an illegal immigrant that hated America.

If she wasnt impoverished why did she accept the evil she railed against?

Medicare was signed into law when she was sixty...five years later she was eligible to receive it. So it is extremely likely that she got more out in Medicare benefits than she paid in.

Hey TM, regardless of her beliefs, SS and Medicare were paid for by her and therefore up for to use as she sees fit.

Because you may not like the system does not mean you cannot use it when you need to.
