Austerity Pushes Europe Into Its Second Recession In Four Years

Any solution is going to have pain. How quick do you want to get the pain over with?

The debt was gradual. The pain needs to be gradual. A prolonged dull headache is better than a heart attack.

The debt was not gradual. Before Bush it was chump change for DECADES. Now in only 12 years it's a beast that may never be tamed.

Send the bill to Bush. His actions and policies are still the major debt cost drivers.

Not all Chimpy's fault.

Yes, he carries the blame for expanding spending and bureaucracy at a greater rate than his "liberal" predecessor and the wars, but we're also dealing with the ticking demographic time bomb viz. entitlements that Perot warned us all about back in '92, and nobody - but nobody- has had the spine to deal frankly and forthrightly with the problem.

Fuck that, Clinton had a surplus!

Lawmakers around the world have ignored the European lesson, though. Australia’s growth slowed last quarter as its government pursued deficit reduction, and in the United States, the so-called “fiscal cliff” brought on by Republican-demanded spending cuts is threatening the country with a bigger austerity package than those that have been implemented in Europe, even with ample proof that the U.S.’s original preference toward stimulus was more effective than the austere European approach.
From the OP link.

Don't you mean "From the idiotic story in the OP link?"

But but but but Boooooooooooooosssssshhhhhhhhh

As much as Bush left to be desired as a President.. at least it want not a 'But but but but CLIIIIIIIIIINNNNTOOOOOONNNNN' fest with him

Never had 1 year where the debt reduced.. that has not happened since 1957

A little historical perspective here this nation has not been debt free since Andrew Jackson was President and that only lasted a year I believe. This problem began long long before Bush or Obama and neither party has done anything to address it in a serious manner.

On that we can agree. However, now isn't the right time to go all austerity crazy like radical teabaggers want.

So just when would be the right time to start cutting spending?

Reasonable tax increases and reasonable spending cuts could begin immediately (I would start with defense).

The problem being no can agree on what reasonable is.

That's true, but it must be done with a scalpel - not a hatchet. There is no quick fix.

Personally, I'd like to see defense cut in half - but gradually.
