Attempts to Roll Back Marriage Equality since the Trump Election.

While Trump himself has been pretty quiet on the subject of same sex marriage and LGBT rights in general, we know that he has surrounded himself with some of the most opprobrious bigots - both religious and those that are just far right-or alt right -ideologues and hate mongers.

There was the recent report - a resulted from a leak from the White House- that an executive order was being drafted to overturn Obamas EO prohibiting discrimination against Federal LGBT employees and contractors. If put in front of Trump, the lazy and incurious plutocrat might have mindlessly signed it. Fortunately, Jerod and Ivanka Kushner- two of the few rational and decent people on his inner circle interceded and it was quashed.

Nevertheless, the knowledge of the anti gay forces lurking in the White House, have , apparently ,emboldened ideological bigots and religious zealots across the country to take new aim at marriage equality.

There are at least three attempts in progress to do so. All have been launched since the election, and I can't help but to believe that they have been inspired and encouraged by the reactionary forces that have gained power and influence recently. No doubt that the prospect of tipping the balance of the Supreme Court is also a factor. Consider:

Tennessee Bill Would Undo Marriage Equality
A bill making its way through the Tennessee state legislature aims to roll back marriage equality in the Volunteer State. But LGBT advocates say the legislation is an unconstitutional attempt to overrule the U.S. Supreme Court.
Tennessee Republican Rep. Mark Pody, who claims God has called him to stop same-sex marriages, introduced House Bill 1412, the Tennessee Natural Marriage Defense Act, last September. At the same time, Sen. Mae Beavers, also a Republican, introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

This is really stupid and unconstitutional is light of the Obergefell ruling. What are these people thinking and do they not have anything better to do? Are there not some actual problems to address that they will spent time, money and energy on this??

As written, the bill seeks to declare it "the policy of Tennessee to defend natural marriage between one man and one woman regardless of any court decision to the contrary." It requires state officials, including the attorney general, to "defend any state or local government official from any lawsuit" arising from an official's refusal to marry a same-sex couple. The bill also seeks to prevent state and local agencies from implementing any punishment for those violating the Supreme Court's June 2015 ruling that mandated legal marriage equality nationwide.

They cannot possibly get away with this unless they can get Obergefell and Windsor overturned, and that is not happening. Similarly, the City of Houston is trying to undermine the right of same sex partners of city employees to recieve spousal benefits, also in violation of Obergefell:

Amid GOP Pressure, Texas High Court to Hear Challenge to Spousal Benefits

The Texas Supreme Court Friday agreed to hear a case challenging some of the rights gained with marriage equality.
The case involves whether the city of Houston is obligated to provide benefits to same-sex spouses of city employees, The Dallas Morning News reports. In September the high court had declined to hear the case, but justices reversed that decision amid pressure from top Republican state officials, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Then we have this out of Arkansas.
Seriously, Arkansas? Even Trump Knows Same-Sex Marriage Is Done Deal
Guys, you aren’t actually going to even believe this. There are still people trying to get rid of same-sex marriage. If you’re all, “didn’t we already fight about this a long time ago?” you’d be right. Except that news apparently hasn’t hit Arkansas just yet. One of its esteemed legislators just filed a Senate Joint Resolution requesting the United States Congress to start working on a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage as the “union of one man and one woman.” How positively late-90s of him.

Yes, it is unlikely to go anywhere, and even congressional Republicans know that it is unpopular and a colossal waste of time. However, the point is, as I have said, that there has been a flurry of this type of activity since the election. Does anyone deny the obvious connection given that fact that no such attempts to roll back marriage equality in the 18 months or so since the Obergefell ruling were introduced until now.??

First of all, to say "my lifestyle " is really fucking stupid! You don't know anything about me or my "life style"

Secondly, I don't call people bigots for disagreeing with me, I call people bigots for bigoted behavior towards others, for trying to make their life hell, because of some moronic idea about "abominations" what ever the fuck that is.

Now, try to digest this:

Those on the extreme right love to accuse the liberals and progressive of being hateful and intolerant but they are either willfully lying, or in denial, projecting their own hatred, and not in touch with reality.

They can say that we are hateful, bigoted, or intolerant all they wish. But let me sum up the difference between them and us. We do indeed have a problem with people who are hateful towards others simply because they do not approve of them or do not understand them. We are not tolerant of people who are on a mission to make life miserable for others in the name of ideology. We are not tolerant of the selfish and greedy who kick those who are less fortunate and struggling to get by, to the curb, so that they and their donors can have even more. We have a problem- and you can call it hateful if you wish- with people who arbitrarily and capriciously chose to marginalize, demean and deprive others of the rights that they take for granted.

We have a problem with people who discriminate and incite violence against others who they do not like, do not understand, or are threatened by them in some vague way. The same goes for vilify the poor, immigrants and with those of other ethnic groups and religions.

In summary, the rights intolerance is driven by hate, greed and ideology . All intolerance is not equal.

Anyone who has hatred and intolerance directed at them- whether it be subtle or overt, verbal or physical, in private or in the public/ political arena has the right to respond proportionately. If that response is portrayed or characterized as hatred so be it. But, know this all hatred and intolerance is not equal. Consider the following:

Far-Right Legal Orgs Object to 'Hate Group' Label, But It Fits

Officials with the Alliance Defending Freedom and Liberty Counsel say their organizations aren’t anti-LGBT “hate groups,” as labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center — but the SPLC says the designation definitely fits.

Both are right-wing legal organizations that represent mostly fundamentalist Christian clients, including many who are anti-LGBT and/or anti-abortion. ADF, which last week hosted a closed-door speech by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, objected to ABC News calling it a hate group in coverage of the matter. It has asked ABC to apologize.

The SPLC, however, says the shoe fits in both cases.

Regarding ADF, SPLC president Richard Cohen released this statement: "The Alliance Defending Freedom spreads demonizing lies about the LGBT community in this country and seeks to criminalize it abroad. If the ADF had its way, gay people would be back in the closet for fear of going to jail. It was inappropriate for Attorney General Sessions to lend his credibility to the group by appearing before it, and it was ironic that he would suggest that the rights of ADF sympathizers are under attack when the ADF is doing everything in its power to deny the equal protection of the laws to the LGBT community."

On Liberty Counsel, Cohen said, "We stand ready to support our designation of Liberty Counsel as a hate group. Liberty Counsel is a group that has consistently called LGBT people 'immoral, unnatural and self-destructive.' It has a track record of attempting to criminalize homosexual conduct and to legalize discrimination against the LGBT community. There is nothing 'pro-family' about dehumanizing LGBT people. This lawsuit and other recent attacks against GuideStar are simply attempts to distract the public from Liberty Counsel’s hateful agenda."

1. In an interview, when the host asked Trump what his stance was on homosexuality, his reply was, "the Supreme Court, already decided that." So, he's aware of where the law stands on gays.
2. Interesting though, that the left wants to bring in millions of Muslims to the US, where the Muslims firm beliefs regarding gays ranges from simply imprisoning them, to the opposite spectrum of throwing them off of rooftops, but not ignoring them.

2. That Muslim thing is a tired and well worn meme that gets even more stupid each time it's used. There has been one documented case of violence against gays by a Muslim - the Pulse Night Club- and there are a lot of questions about the motive. Right wingers, as we all know, hate both gays and Muslims and it is quite obvious that you want to play them off against each other.

There are, however, numerous attacks on LGBT people by others, the vast majority of which identify as Christians. And that is not to mention all of the "good Christians" who are working to roll back gay rights and relegate them to the closet once again. When was the last time that to heard a Muslim railing against gays and gay rights in this country? Muslims who come here are coming because unlike people like you, they appreciate the freedoms that this country affords to all people and are quite willing to live in peace. So just cut the crap!

Yet, can you seriously point to any existing Muslim nation where homosexuals can openly claim to be such without fear of imprisonment or death? The answer remains.....no.

Isn't it unconstitutional for the government to do this? You'd think being that government can't even invest in infrastructure, education or help its own fucking poor.

My my...how opprobrious of you.

1. Trump has proven that he is full of shit and is willing to- and has- thrown LGBT people under the bus to pander to his demented moronic minions.

The discussion is about THIS FUCKING COUNTRY! Stop deflecting!

Isn't it unconstitutional for the government to do this? You'd think being that government can't even invest in infrastructure, education or help its own fucking poor.

Holy shit....you managed pack a lot of ridiculousness in just two sentences.
How do you do that?
Not that I really want to know how....just damn....you are very good at it.

So much for being an free country! What exactly is free about it? We're the most imprisoned nation on earth per capita and now we want to treat entire sections of our population like second class citizens.

Some of us liberals need to start doing the same shit against christians if they don't stop.

Christians?
Church attendance is at an all time low...try again.
Christians are now nearing only 30% of the population.

Time for liberals that love freedom to start putting up signs saying,"we don't sell or do business with religious bigots."

Sorry but idiocy must hurt.

Trump and the myth that he is gay friendly and accepting of them

It has come to my attention that there is a segment of the LGBT demographic who like many others have been duped into voting for the Orange Ogre known as Trump. There is in fact a Facebook group “ LGBTs for Trump. Perhaps it was due to his assertion that he would protect gays from Islamic extremists. Maybe some were swayed when he said that he would happily allow Catlin Jenner to use the women’s room at Trump Tower. Oh yes, and he attended a same sex wedding also. Then there was the time that he assured a Lesbian journalist that there would be further advances for LGBT folks under his watch, all the while ignoring that fact that he is a pathological liar who tailors his message to whoever he is in front of with little thought.

It also seems that some of these folks placed the promise of economic growth, lower taxes, and national security above their own self interests. In any case I do believe that these people and others -and many others will soon have a serious case of buyer’s remorse when they discover that he will not deliver on his foreign and domestic policy promises AND that their hard-won rights will be eroded.

Donald Trump Is Proving How Mortally Dangerous He Is To LGBT Equality
Donald Trump Is Proving How Mortally Dangerous He Is To LGBT Equality | The Huffington Post

Contrary to those in the media and elsewhere who claimed he was “far more accepting” on LGBT issues than other GOP candidates, Donald Trump is proving that he very much will be a force against LGBT equality if elected president. And he’s doing it in a more insidious, under-the-radar way than any previous GOP presidential nominee.

Selected Excerpts:

Though he rarely raises his positions against LGBT rights on the campaign trail, Trump is making pacts with anti-LGBT forces. Today, Trump spoke at the Road to the Majority summit in Washington, an event attended by Christian right activists and sponsored by the Faith and Freedom Coalition and Concerned Women for America, both of which fight against LGBT rights. I’m with you 100 percent,” he said, and, knowing the event was televised live on the cable networks, he spoke with the dog whistle on LGBT rights, alluding to attacks on “marriage and family” and championing “religious liberty,” which of course has been the term used by evangelicals to deny LGBT people of rights. The crowd roared with approval
.

And on June 21 Trump will have a private meeting with over 400 of the most bigoted, most homophobic and most influential anti-LGBT advocates in the United States — from Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins to James Dobson, founder of the Focus on the Family — the bedrock of the religious right, which has been a prominent part of the base of the Republican Party for decades. Many of these groups, like Family Research Council, have been labeled as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Trump had already quietly made pacts with some anti-LGBT forces, and promised to do what he can to overturn the Supreme Court’s historic Obergefell ruling, which he called, “shocking.” He promised he’d appoint justices to the Supreme Court who might do that, and certainly the list of extreme judges he provided recently shouldn’t give LGBT people any comfort.

And how did he sucker these people into supporting him?

But Trump will also likely accept an endorsement from the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR), the gay GOP group that’s been desperate to be validated by the GOP for years and is aching for a meeting with Trump — publicly calling for one — so they can get behind him. Already LCR leader Gregory T. Angelo has called Trump “one of the best, if not the best, pro-gay Republican candidates to ever run for the presidency.”

This guy is delusional!

As I pointed out a few weeks ago, simply having Ben Carson prominent in his campaign — a man who compared homosexuality to bestiality and pedophilia — is an affront to LGBT people. And as RightWingWatch’s Brian Tashman noted, Trump has also “partnered with Harlem’s notorious ‘stone homos‘ pastor James David Manning and far-right radio show host Alex Jones, who thinks the LGBT rights movement is a ‘suicide cult’ bent on the destruction of humanity.”

Republican leaders, know he cannot win without motivating a large portion of evangelicals. And right now anti-LGBT laws and measures meant to blunt equality are animating religious conservatives in a big way, as a furious backlash to marriage equality plays out across the country. No matter what Trump has said in the past, or what the media or desperate gay Republicans may say now, there’s no question that Trump must bow to an anti-LGBT agenda if he wants to win the presidency. That makes him a mortal danger to LGBT equality.

So now that he is the president.....does anyone think that he will fully turn his back on these people. I have my doubts.

in the last two weeks, what has he done that is anti LGBT?

you have convicted him before there is any evidence of wrongdoing

you assume he is anti LGBT but you don't know

This election was not about LGBT, it was about america and jobs and healthcare replacement

Go for a walk and calm down. Trump is not out there trashing LGBT, its probably not on his radar with everything else he is trying to do. They are just americans without specialty or labels, or should be. Just americanas
Actually I am just back from a walk and I'm quite calm. I was before too.

Now, I didn't say that he has done anything yet, nor did I say that he was going to. I said that there are warning signs based on his past associations, his need to kiss up to his base, and his appointments. Do you think that Sessions, as AG will actively defend LGBT people who are victims of discrimination in federal court? Do you think that Trump would direct Sessions to not defend discriminatory state laws that are unconstitutional as the Obama Administration did?

What about Carson at HUD. Will he promote policies aimed at curbing discrimination against LGBT people. How about DeVos at Education.? I don't think so.
they will defend any case that discriminates against homo marriages, but don't count on them looking the other way if gays push for a state allowing pedophiles to fuck babies and children like the Obama AG would do when a federal law was being ignored.

Gays don't want equality. They want specialiality with the right of veto over anything they don't like. s.

Right.

Gays wanting to be treated the same legally were not looking for 'equality'

LOL

Its Christians who don't want equality- they want to be exempt from the laws everyone else has to follow.
If the Supreme Court decides that a baker can refuse to participate in any way in homo marriages, I think this issue can be put to rest since there are 100s of other bakers who are willing to bakes homo cakes. This is not the Jim Crow era where there was no alternatives for blacks for public accommodations.

That's why allowing gays to sue businesses is a travesty. I hope the SCOTUS does the right thing and put this matter to rest. Be happy with your fag marriages, because that's all the accommodation you get unless someone wants to accommodate you.

Of course if your business is a business that goes to weddings- your business has to follow the same rules as every other business.
Don't count your chickens. We'll know in June when SCOTUS decides. Unlike accommodating blacks where there is no amendment to protect bigots from accommodating blacks, we have a first amendment right to religion that doesn't allow you to step on a religious person's beliefs. These are core sacred rights. We won't let you shit on them like you think you can just because a fag-loving judge ruled in your favor.

another race, if the server believes that doing business with someone of another race is sinful could be construed as blocking free exercise- but it isn't
Pumping gas for a black is not a sin against God. Forcing Christians or Muslims (try doing that) to help you celebrate your marriage would be against God's commands.

Speaking of Muslims, why don't fags ever bring their lawsuits against their businesses?

Pumping gas for a black is not a sin against God.
You do realize that there are some who might think that it is, and these religious freedom laws being passed by some state- although aimed at gays- might just allow discrimination against just about anyone who a business owner disapproves of, maybe it will be you next time. My religion says that I should not do business with bigots, so stay the fuck out of my shop.
