Are you an ally of peace, civility and reason in politics, or are you an opponent?

When you talk about politics is your intent to burn bridges or build them? Are you weaponizing words or using them to provoke calm and good dialogue? Are you furious at the ones you disagree with or are you trying your best to understand them? Be honest with yourself. Most of you do nothing but provoke tension and vitriol. Most of you dehumanize the other side to the extent that you actually believe they are evil and not just people that see things differently. Most of you don't actually care about the truth of any given situation and automatically take a defensive position against the other side. If you actually cared about being right you would welcome criticism of your own beliefs and examine it honestly, changing your opinions when necessary, because obviously nobody it right about everything, right? You think in extremes in a grey reality. It doesn't work. The problem isn't left or right; the problem is left and right. If you're filled with anger and hate, if you lose it when your views are questioned, then you are the problem.

I want socialism destroyed, and I will never apologize for that. Capitalism is the best.

If your way is best then reality will reflect that given time and opportunity. You don't need to seek destruction. What's truly ideal has a way of ending up on top in the end. Kind of like the free market of ideas.

Nobody here is interested in listening to opposing views. They're here to make fun of people who disagree with their own opinions.

You obviously don't know what's going on, or you wouldn't be so naive and idealistic, and you obviously haven't studied the history of despots and dictators around the world.
1. We have a 2nd Amendment for a very good reason.
2. We have a very powerful military for a very good reason
3. We have a very robust law enforcement establishment for a very good reason
4. We have prisons for a very good reason
5. Our enemies are all around us, from without and from within, and are insidious, eternal vigilance is always required.

I hope you realized from the get-go that you were talking to people who wouldn't listen. But I liked your OP, Confounding.

No, the best is a system of capitalist, and socialist policies working together in balance.

The problems arise when either system gains too much dominance.

Education is the key. Our education system is loaded with socialist propaganda parrots that have never worked in the real world. They need to be removed.

Better not to go through 60 years of Soviet-style application to reach that point.

Your opening article was really right on. Sadly right now in this country that will not take place for a few more years. At least I hope we can get back to being a civilized country. When we come to a board like this it is to express our views but we don't want the other sides views in most cases. But when you break it all down and get off the internet and talk to real people face to face the vitriol is not near as bad. Matter of fact if you set down and talk to one of the opposite views you will find out that for the most part we want the same thing. Yes their are different ways to get to the same place but I believe that most in this country reject the absolute of both parties. We all want a good job that will support a family. I hope we can agree on that. We want a strong country but not an obnoxious country. We have differences many times as to which road will lead us where we want to be. Sadly our officials in Washington on both sides are not getting their job done. We all know we need much better care of our infrastructure as we are falling behind other countries in this regard. I don't think anyone wants that do they.

Try talking to "real people" about something controversial like LGBTQ or immigration, see how quickly the facade of civility crumbles.

You’re one of the biggest name callers on this board. Eat a bag of dicks.

It's beginning to change, litman, the reasonable "man on the street," I mean. I hear Hannity-like venom being repeated by people who don't know anything about politics except what he tells them. I hear from progressive coworkers the most ridiculous accusations and twisting of the truth. Social media and the loosening of decorum on tv and radio are fueling a lot of nasty hype. I gently question them all and piss off everyone in the process. But I'm not lecturing. I have an opinion, too. I blame media of all sorts and all persuasions of being hungry for "clicks." It's another age of yellow journalism.

The best you can do is attack them with reason.

Not that I've never been involved in a good insult feast.

Problem being is that the socialists will never be satisfied with their lot, and will constantly work to expand their avaricious grasp.....And if you oppose them it's not because of any principled stance, it's because you have a character flaw that they are above, and as such you need their view imposed upon you by force.

In the end, there is no dealing with such intellectually dishonest and fundamentally violent people.

Consensual agreement is the only thing that will work towards civility. Forcing ones will on another is the root of ALL conflict.
Blaming someone else for ones problems is a lack of introspect. Respect is earned. Trust is earned and is often abused. To abuse trust leads to disrespect. To abuse trust is an epitome of disrespect. Being disrespectful to another who has trusted leads to a lack of self respect. Without self respect respect cannot be shown to others.

A citizen's sex life is not the government's business.

I agree that the elected "representatives" of the people are not doing their jobs. They need to drop this partisan, destruction at all costs bullshit and concentrate on the peoples' business. I'm tired of this shit. But, alas, apparently the elected "representatives" would rather pander to the press/media complex. Must be nice to see your name in print, all the f**kin' time. Of course, they make some pretty serious bank with their circus act, too.
