Are there any solar energy manufacturing plants left?

Almost nobody in the world takes solar energy seriously anymore. The last major European solar energy plant went bankrupt last week. It is doubtful that there are any U.S. solar energy manufacturing entities that aren't subsidized by the federal government and that ain't likely to last much longer. You almost gotta laugh that environmentalists activists were hyper concerned by an alleged endangered obscure minnow in California while the former president signed off on a 40 year waiver that allowed windmills to kill migratory endangered birds. Has anyone done an environmental impact study of the dangerous chemicals inherent in solar energy plants and the danger to the environment with acres and acres of ugly solar panels that produce a laughable negligible addition to the energy grid?

We have a couple left in Canada, all sponsored and paid for by the government, but they call this "free market capitalism" LOL. Give a company a couple of hundred of million of taxpayer debt, they go bankrupt in a couple of years with no consequences or personal loss. Oh well, "capitalism at work".

Worse, energy rates in Ontario are causing people to go choose between heating in the winter or food.

Then again how many large companies in the US don't receive any money from the Federal or State govts? Probably not many. They call that capitalism too, ha.

Science, mostly paid for by the US govt.

Take a Pharma company. They don't do all the research themselves, they couldn't afford to do it, they let the govt do it. Then when something become PROFITABLE, they jump on it, take the profits, then demand that the govt give them tax breaks or they'll move somewhere else, even though the govt has just handed them billions worth of free research.

The difference, most of those that are some how subsidized show a profit. How long will it be before Teslamor Solar City show a profit? Never?

Hasn't Canada always depended on cheap fossil fuel for the last hundred years? Why does it come as a surprise that the trend toward so-called sustainable fuel has resulted in a choice between food and heat for Canadians who seem to be longing for global warming but might be in a global cooling event that the government fails to acknowledge.

The problem is you're not thinking about the future. Renewable energy takes time to develop as an industry. The more it is used, the cheaper it becomes.

Can't you understand that it's not renewable if it is supported by the sweat of taxpayer funding that relies on fossil fuel energy?.We can virtually dismiss solar energy and we have to review the environmental impact of wind energy.

Of course, like anything. Why are tax payers subsidizing these businesses though? Free markets are perfect when left to their own devices, instead, they discourage innovation, not support it. Who is going to be more motivated and find the best and brightest, someone who is given free money with no risk, or someone who has his own investment at risk and that of his investors? Without this risk there is no incentive.

I love successful wealthy people, as long as they earn it via the risk/reward continuum. What we are experiencing in Canada is nepotism, crony capitalism and outright corruption. In particular in Ontario.

I am ok with some tax breaks for a period of time, and the GAAP accounting system is already very good to businesses who take risk. This passing debt to future generations for todays crooks is immortal and as far as I am concerned national suicide.

Yes, I understand what renewable energy means.

Both for good and for bad.

"the sweat of taxpayer funding" is rather emotional, don't you think? Seeing as the taxpayer pays subsidies to fossil fuel companies too.

Fossil Fuel Subsidies & Finance - Oil Change International

"Internationally, governments provide at least $775 billion to $1 trillion annually in subsidies, not including other costs of fossil fuels related to climate change, environmental impacts, military conflicts and spending, and health impacts."

"As of July 2014, Oil Change International estimates United States fossil fuel subsidies at $37.5 billion annually, including $21 billion in production and exploration subsidies."

Say WHAT? Yep, the US govt spends $35.5 billion a year on fossil fuels. This isn't just handing out cash to these firms as subsidies, it includes using the military to protect oil etc.

Subsidizing American Energy: A Breakdown By Source - IER

About 6 billion is spent on renewable energy.

So, you have a problem when it's renewable energy getting $6 billion, but you don't have a problem when it's fossil fuels getting much more than this? Wow.

To some extent I agree with you. The govt does need to help out in certain areas because there is scientific research that is just not viable. Only once in a while does something become viable. But the govt should be saying "hey, we paid for this, you need to pay us back for the research we did".

I feel ya dude. There is a need for an alternative to carbon based energy. The problem is the way our political leaders (crooks and buffoons) try to develop it. Instead of trying to encourage it by getting the Tesla's and Solyndra's to start a company and encourage the growth with tax payers money ( and future tax payers, national debt) they should be giving that money to guys in labs with white coats. People who aren't lining their pockets, but rather people who are sincere and capable of advancing the technology. Solyndra cost the tax payers over half a billion dollars. Imagine what a few hundred nerds could do in a lab with $500 billion to develop solar energy or better batteries. Instead that money has made a few guys rich and got a lot of politicians reelected, because they got money from donors in the solar energy industry. And now we have jack shit to show for it.

You didn't build that!

China captured the market years ago.

Why China Is Dominating the Solar Industry

.
You could say that China is dominating the toy industry because of all the cheap junk it produces but it ain't true and neither is the assumption that China dominates the solar industry because of the cheap solar junk it produces. The truth is that the solar bubble has burst and outside of isolated ugly panels along the highway that power small electronic devices there is no demand for the stuff. When you need a football field worth of ugly panels and dozens of batteries full of hazmat chemicals to power a single home it just doesn't make sense. The reason the European solar plant went bankrupt isn't because China produces cheaper panels, it's because the subsidies were cut, the energy produced is negligible and costly to maintain and there is no demand for solar panels.

Solar Growth and the ITC
The Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) has provided industry stability and growth since its initial passage in 2006. In the last decade, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60%. To learn more about the ITC and its impact on the solar industry, visit our ITC Policy Page.

Solar as an Economic Engine
Nearly 260,000 Americans work in solar - more than double the number in 2012 - at more than 9,000 companies in every U.S. state. By 2021, that number is expected to increase to more than 360,000 workers

Solar Industry Facts and Figures

All the hoopla about solar energy is just that........hoopla. Drive around any neighborhood.........what do you see after going by 200 houses? About 3 or 4 solar roof set-ups. And talk to some of these owners about how it went with their "inverter" installations.:coffee:. It is what it is............a fringe energy source. Has been for years.............will be forever.:deal: It all comes down to costs...........like always in this world.
