Are nations like children?

Something I mused yesterday was how most every older nation took a stab at empire and conquest, but evolved beyond it. But the younger countries like the US are still in their empire-phase. US is in its' 'terrible twos' in terms of centuries. And we're trying to take over the world now that we can kinda walk around on our wobbly legs. England tried empire but basicly collapsed, Soviets did too, Central and South America empires failed, Asian ones too, Rome, Greece, Persia, etc.. Now it seems it's the US' turn to try, realize it never works out, collapse, and finally evolve into a nation that can get along better globally without trying to rule the world.

But is this attempt at empire just part of every country? Can't we instead look at the past and learn from it and skip this part, or is it unavoidable?

Absolutely not. We can't avoid it. It's going to be a bitter pill for those that have denied it's very existence.
